We’ve got a major shift in the weather happening out there today, but don’t you worry: it’ll still be windy. You may just have to drive a little further, and the steadiness and reliability of the wind won’t be quite up to par. The 6am gradients (thanks, cat) were .06 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .39 (eph-dls). That’s enough for 12-15 from Viento to The Dalles this morning with lighter wind most other places and a touch more at Arlington. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
As a front moves through the area today, the wind will pick up, although the western Gorge will remain cloudy with gusty westerlies at 12-15. East of Mosier, expect 22-25 by midday and 25-29 late in the day. The Rowena and Arlington stretches are probably your best bet today for the steadiest wind; the Maryhill stretch doesn’t tend to be steady with this kind of setup.
Tomorrow will be cloudy and possibly showery in the central Gorge, meaning you’ll likely have to drive east of Mosier for sunshine and reliable wind. Expect 7-11 everywhere in the morning with 22-25 in the afternoon from Mosier (maybe – perhaps Lyle) east to Arlington. Watch out for thunderstorms on the radar image tomorrow – those will have a detrimental effect on the wind.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’d like to talk about butter today, in part because it’s on sale at Rosauer’s at the spectacular price of two for five bucks.
Back in the 1980’s, butter got a bad rap. You may not know this, but butter is full of fat. Saturated fat, no less. Back in the ’80’s, saturated fat was bad; it was theorized to raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. So, people stopped using butter. They switched to margarine, a (flavorless, disgusting) oil product stabilized and solidfied by a process known as hydrogenation. We’re not gonna get into the details here, but what we’re talking about is the stuff now known as “trans fats”. You know, the really, really bad stuff. Trans fats raise LDL, lower HDL, cause systemic inflammation and increase triglycerides in the bloodstream. That’s theorized to be bad.
What’s taken as fact (based in solid research, even) in one decade may be disproved in another. That goes for the nature of butter, the nature of the universe, and the nature of the human mind, among many other things. Just because experts “prove” something today or base a treatment in science today, doesn’t mean it won’t be disproved tomorrow.
Butter is one example. Another is mindfulness: practiced for thousands of years in the East, it’s just becoming popular and scientifically-backed in the West. So here’s the deal: keep an open mind about the things you hear as “fact”. We don’t really know if butter is good for us or bad for us or just something to eat in moderation. All we know for sure right now is that it’s delicious and it’s two for five bucks at Rosauer’s. It freezes well. Go stock up.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s mostly cloudy this morning, and that’s very exciting because it hasn’t been mostly cloudy in a long, long time. There are even a few sprinkles on the radar image this morning. Wow! Expect mostly cloudy conditions all day with a chance of sprinkles tonight. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 70’s later. Light wind early, moderate wind late, 2% chance of rainbow (unless you’re in my kitchen, and then it’s 100%, because I’m making unicorn-rainbow cookies).
Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy with a chance of sprinkles early. Temps will be in the low 60’s in the morning and the low 70’s in the afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms. Light wind early, moderate wind later, 16% chance of rainbows.
Monday starts off partly cloudy and becomes clear. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
Holy hell yes – that new pavement from the Mt. Hood Country Store to Parkdale is the Best Pavement in Hood River County! It’s totally worth the ride up there. I give it five stars. Don’t forget to stop at Ellisa’s house while you’re in Parkdale and give her a hug.

Upcoming Events
Happy Saturday. Looks like they ran the Wildside Relay yesterday, so you don’t have to watch for masses of paddlers this morning. Just watch for some paddlers who might be out taking advantage of the leftover wind. Kona One is scheduled to have longboard races today and tomorrow (and also Monday if you look on their website), but I’m unable, despite looking across multiple blogs, websites, and Facebook pages, to find out if they are having those races at Stevenson or Hood River (both are listed as possibilities). So… sorry… can’t help you out. I do wish event organizers would contact me directly! Anyway… the Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest continues in Stevenson today, and so does dighy racing in Cascade Locks. Today’s the last day of the Hood River County Fair.
Here in Hood River, there’s a trail run at 8am at Post Canyon and there’s a beginner women’s bike ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 9am. From 2pm-10pm today, it’s Art & Wine Fusion, a street fair, in White Salmon. From 5pm-8pm, Doug’s Sports has Tony Smiley playing in the street at a fundraiser for Punchbowl Falls Park (because we fully fund supersonic bombers, but not parks). If you purchase a pair of Tevas from Doug’s today, Teva will match the price as a donation to the park. So, go buy some slippahs.
Tomorrow is free yoga day: 9am at Crossfit HR and Yoga Samadhi (that’s my favorite), 4pm for Jesus-themed YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Root Down in Hood River.
Coming up next Saturday, there’s a Shady Garden Party at Pacific Hermitage. Bring your own parasol and cookies to share.
Have an awesome day today!
