Saturday. Clouds and rain and Music Festival of the Gorge!

I wish I could tell you that today looks perfect, but it doesn’t. It does, however, carry the potential for at least some wind underneath the clouds and between the falling raindrops. Early morning gradients were .07 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc), a good start. River temp, before I forget, is 67 degrees. Continued after the…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Today’s setup includes rain this morning with a cold front this afternoon. That will limit the morning wind to 10-13 at the low spots and 15-18 at the high spots (Hatch, Mosier?, Avery?, Arlington). The front is forecast to move through mid-afternoon. You’ll know that’s happening because the clouds will move eastward faster, breaking up and letting sunshine through. At that point, models indicate we’ll see 24-27 from Rowena (maybe) to Arlington (most likely). The western Gorge will stay in the gusty 15-18 or less range today.

Sunday sees another weak disturbance move through midday. Before that happens, we’ll see 12-15 through much of the Gorge. The wind should build to 23-26 on Sunday afternoon from Mosier all the way to Arlington. Steven’s Locks to Hood River on Sunday will end up with gusty 15-18 or so, more if the clouds really clear out.

Monday starts off light and variable. As weather dynamics do their thing off the coast, the wind will pick up. By Monday afternoon, you can expect 23-26 from Steven’s Locks to Rufus. Models are really not agreeing much after Monday. They currently indicate light and variable wind on Tuesday morning with 15-18 in the afternoon. Given the uncertainty, you may want to hold off on planning around that.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had an interesting conversation recently with an acquaintance of mine. This person said to me, “I can’t do this because the ethics code says such and such. I can’t do this because I’ve learned something in contradiction at a conference. I can’t do this because my colleagues say not to.”

I found myself quite irritated at this person over the course of the conversation. I struggled to understand why. An hour later, it struck me. Rather than speaking from her own experience, this individual was blaming others for her actions. Perhaps she was trying to spare me pain. Perhaps she was trying to spare herself pain. I don’t know. What I do know is that I would have preferred her to speak from her heart and simply say, “T, I just don’t want to go there because I feel uncomfortable and uneasy about it…”

We often try to pass off responsibility for our choices on others, especially when our desires might bring up hurt for someone else. We think we’re being kind. In truth, kindness is being vulnerable enough to be honest with people we value. Honesty allows for deeper connection. Honesty allows us to be clear about our impact on a relationship. Being clear allows us to repair the rupture, minimize the damage, and placate the pain.

Honesty takes a lot of courage. I’m guessing you want to be known as a courageous person. So next time you’re in a situation where you’re worrying you might disappoint someone or hurt them, have the courage to speak your truth. That allows you and the other person to move forward from a place of understanding, not a place of guessing. Be courageous. Be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
