Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong offshore high pressure on Saturday drives strong morning westerlies. A weak low dropping along the coast in the afternoon brings rain to the western Gorge and shifts the wind to the eastern Gorge. For this morning, gradients start with 0.12 and 0.04. Most locations have westerlies at 14-17, except Viento (mid 20’s) and Moiser (just guessing it’s stronger due to the location of the cloud line). These low clouds make things tricky.

If the river respects the models, we’ll have a period of gusty 23-27 from Viento to The Dalles this morning (probably strongest near Lyle and Rowena). The wind then drops to 10-13 in the west as showers start up. Head east from Avery to Arlington for gusty 24-27 this afternoon. It looks like the wind will fade in the afternoon, so maybe drive pre-emptively. River flow is 94,200 cfs, river temp is 54 degrees, and high temp forecast is 46.

Sunday stays cloudy, and the wind will be lighter. Expect W 10-13 everywhere to start the day. Afternoon: 7-10 in the western Gorge and NNE 10-20 east of The Dalles. Monday looks light and variable.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Clear sky Saturday morning gives way to orographic snowfall this afternoon. The snow level will be 4500′ early and 1500′ tonight. About 0.3” water value (WV) falls between 1pm and Sunday morning. That gives us about 2-3” of new snow. Wind will be NW 20 in the morning, NW 30 in the afternoon, and NE 15 overnight.

Sunday looks mostly cloudy. A few flurries are possible in the afternoon from easterly orographic clouds. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon. Expect a free air freezing level of 0′ under clear sky Sunday night. No accumulation of new snow. Wind: NE 15 in the morning, NE 25 in the afternoon, and NE 20-25 overnight.

Monday starts clear, turns cloudy mid afternoon, and ends with snow overnight. The freezing level will be 0′ early. The snow level will be around 1500′ overnight. Snow starts up around 8pm. About 0.2” WV falls, for 2-3” of dry snow. Wind: NE 20-25 early, NW 20 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and WNW 35 after midnight. Light orographic snowfall continues on Tuesday for a few more inches with a snow level of 2500′ or so.

Cycling

10/28: Motorized use is open on ALL Hood River County Land now. Kreps lands have reopened per their FB page. Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions up high. Do not ride those trails, as you will do permanent damage due to liquefied soil structure. Mt. Hood National Forest: some areas have reopened. Expect many downed trees.
