Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

The aggressively anti-wind weather continues for much of the next week. When there’s not an offshore low pressure system, there will be becalming inland high pressure. Let’s look at Saturday: we have an approaching low offshore. That means little-to-no gradient as you can tell from the glassy river. The wind will be light easterly, then light and variable, then light westerly (5-10 at best) in the evening. Don’t get too excited about the evening; after 5pm a downpour arrives! River flow is 300-330kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 67F.

Sunday sees another approaching front coupled with transient, dirty high pressure off the California coast. This helps some. However, cold air pushing in from the NW destabilizes the atmosphere in the afternoon and renders the forecast rather unreliable. Here’s the best-case scenario: the day starts with W 10 at Rooster and calm wind everywhere else. Westerlies build to 8-12 west of Mosier and 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington by late morning. If thunderstorms don’t enter the picture – and they likely will – we’ll see gusty 22-26 from Lyle to Boardman in the afternoon with 8-11 in the western Gorge. High temp: 68F.

On Monday, a ridge builds offshore and tilts positive in the afternoon. The day starts with westerlies at 8-11 all through the Gorge. Mid-morning brings 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington with 7-10 in the west. Afternoon: 10-13+ west of Lyle with 22-26 from Lyle to Threemile. Best guess is that the direction will be “wrong” for The Wall, but heck, I could be wrong! On Tuesday, high pressure shifts inland and low pressure hovers well off the coast. East wind results. Wednesday: weak weather system and associated transient, unreliable westerlies. Have a lovely weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Today is the White Salmon Spring Fest at Rhinegarten Park. This weekend is the Beargrass Bicycles Beatdown ride. It goes from the shop to the Eightmile Campground on Saturday and returns to town on Sunday. The shop will shuttle your camping gear and also provide food for you. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
