Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a beautiful sunny day on Mt. Hood, and Meadows and Timberline are both running lifts. Meadows has a pray for snow party in the lodge this evening. Skibowl will be open for tubing today and tomorrow. Saturday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ early, 6000′ this afternoon, and 9000′ overnight (although temps will be right at freezing, so maybe it will appear lower). Wind today will slowly build out of the SW, peaking at 20-25 overnight.

Sunday starts off clear. Clouds move in during the afternoon, and rain starts falling after 4pm. The snow level will be somewhere between 6000′ and 9000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. We’ll see about 2.5” of rain overnight. Yes, you read that correctly. That might start off as snow, but will definitely turn to rain pretty quickly. Wind Sunday will be SW 20 early, WSW 30-35 in the afternoon, and WSW 40-45+ overnight.

Monday looks rainy. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 9000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. Wind will be WSW 45+ early and SW 25 in the afternoon and evening. About 1.7” of rain falls during the day and another 1” falls overnight. Lighter rainfall continues Tuesday, and heavier rainfall returns on Wednesday. During this time period, the snow level will be around 10,000′.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking to one of my meditation teachers last summer about how driven I am. I think many of us adventure sports enthusiasts are the same way. We’re always trying to achieve more skill at something. This may be because we feel compelled to aim high. We may feel loved and accepted and competent and seen when we achieve at high levels. That’s all good.

And it may not make the most sense from a performance perspective. Slowing down just a bit and doing the things we’ve mastered solidifies those mental representations. It’s kinda like musicians doing scales. Master the basics, and everything that follows will flow more smoothly.

You can use this as an excuse to “just have fun”. Ride at a pace that’s in the middle of your comfort zone. For a few days, only do those tricks you’ve already mastered. Let yourself enjoy the gains you’ve made, and take some time to notice how far you’ve come. If your eyes are always on the future, on being better-stronger-faster, you’re missing out on how awesome you already are. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies on Saturday morning build to E 20-25 near Rooster and 15-20 near Stevenson midday, fading just a bit in the afternoon. Sunday looks either calm or very light westerly. Monday sees west wind at 7-11 with heavy rain.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I walked outside, and the Nothing was there. Above the Nothing is sunshine. The Nothing should burn off at some point today, leaving us with sunshine. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s this afternoon. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday looks Nothing and then sunny and then cloudy and then rainy after dark. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early with icy roads possible. Temps will rise to the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Calm wind. No rainbows. Monday looks WET. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 62% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt on Syncline on Friday afternoon was pretty much perfect. Go ride there instead of Whoopdee or Post, which are too wet to ride. Yes, riding in mud can be fun, but you do irreparable damage to the trails. If you’d like to give back, there’s a work party in Post Canyon at 9:30am at Family Man today, Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Today is the annual gear swap at HRVHS. There’s a HRATS work party in Post Canyon at Family Man at 9:30. Meadows has a pray for snow party tonight, and today is the first day of tubing at Skibowl this season. There’s a work party at the Hatchery today from 9am to noon. On Sunday, there are three free yoga classes: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s all-ages pickup touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
