Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Westerlies return to the “enough” zone today and stay there for a while. The strongest day of the next five is clearly Sunday, but you may have to head east of Hood River, or even east of Mosier, to find the best results. High temps fall from the upper 80s today into the 70s on Sunday and hang out at 80 or less for most of the extended period. Sounds perfectly pleasant!

Saturday starts with pressures of 29.94/29.86/29.84 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.02. As I started writing this just before 7am, westerlies were in the 15-18 range from Viento to Swell with 5-10mph pretty much everywhere else between Stevenson and Arlington. The wind dropped to 10-13 before I finished the forecast! We should see a brief period of gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s late morning to early afternoon. Swell will be extra gusty, and will likely drop to 16-19 after an hour or two. Between Mosier and Rufus, afternoon westerlies pick up to 23-26 (not a great direction at Rufus, probably) with 17-20 at Arlington. Models hint at a late 20-23mph session at Swell after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 120-211kcfs (150-211 at Rufus), river temp is 62.42F, and high temp forecast is 87F for Hood River.

A weak front passing through overnight drags in a LOT of marine clouds for Sunday morning. It also drags in a swap meet at Windance. Okay, that has nothing to do with a passing shortwave, but there IS a swap meet! Models have them extending all the way to Rowena! This would be very impressive give Saturday’s weather, but hey, it’s possible. The day starts with post-frontal westerlies at 25-28 from Stevenson all the way to Threemile (more at Viento). The wind quickly settles into a groove mid-morning and drops to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River with 27-30 from Mosier to Threemile. Afternoon: 31-34 from Mosier to Boardman. A couple hours of gusty, very gusty, 24-27 from Stevenson to Hood River mid-afternoon fade to gusty 21-24 or less in the evening. High temp: 73F.

Marine clouds Monday morning burn off in the afternoon as a very brief ridge starts to build. As of this morning, models give us 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River pretty much all day. To the east: calm or nearly so. High temp: 77F.

Extended: Tuesday’s saving grace will be much hotter weather in the desert. 14-17 to start, 21-24 later. Focus: Corridor. Wednesday looks windier. A weak low off the WA coast sends cooler air into the west side during the day. Desert heating way outpaces the metro area. 25-28+ is the forecast. Westerlies of some sort stick around (probably) through next weekend, although models disagreement increases late next week. Have fun out there!
