Saturday. Another windy summer day…

When I looked out my window this morning in search of marine clouds, I had to lean way over to see them down in the hole. There were, however, just a couple of fluffy marine clouds over Hood River at 7am. That, combined with gradients of .13 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc), suggests you may want…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

If not, you should be able to find wind most places today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 17-20 at Swell to start the day with 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus and 15-18 at Arlington. Models suggest the steadiest, strongest, longest lasting wind will be between Swell and The Dalles today, with beaches further east backing off in the afternoon. My suspicion is that the Rufus stretch will also be good today, so take that, models. By mid to late morning, you can expect 25-29 from Swell to Rowena. Models do suggest the wind will taper off to 24-27 this afternoon, giving us 24-27 from Swell to Rufus. Stevenson will start off light and build to 20-23.

We should see a lot more marine clouds on Sunday morning, which will shift the wind a bit to the east. Expect 16-19 from Mosier to Arlington to start the day. The wind will pick up by late morning, hitting 22-25 form Mosier to Arlington. By afternoon, we’ll have 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington. Stevenson will probably stay cloudy tomorrow, with light wind early and 11-15 in the afternoon. The Viento to Hood River stretch will probably be cloudy with 12-15.

Monday currently looks like 10-13 east of The Dalles to start the day with 22-25 in the afternoon from Mosier to Arlington. Tuesday currently looks similar to Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I tweaked my knee pretty good yesterday while I was windsurfing. I actually did it sticking a back loop, so it was almost worth it, but not quite. As I was writing the forecast this morning, I realized I was only a tiny bit upset that I couldn’t get on the water today. “That’s interesting…” I thought, realizing that this is a nice respite from having to jam all my responsibilities into what feels like a very short day.

Most of us (except the White Sprinter Van dwellers) have very busy lives. And wind sports are fickle – the timing is out of our control. We’re left juggling our lives to accommodate the wind. That can sometimes feel quite hectic, especially for people with jobs, families, other hobbies, and oh, grad school!

In part because the availability of wind sports is out of our control, most of us get frustrated when we’re injured or otherwise unable to participate. We bemoan our circumstances, and we experience negative emotions.

But sometimes being hurt or sick or exhausted can give us a moment to slow down. Sitting still gives us a chance to connect with people, look at the natural beauty around us, and enjoy a moment or two of simple reflection. We humans are conditioned by thousands of years of evolution to a slower pace than we experience these days. Being forced to stop moving allows us to experience the slower pace of life that our genes desire. All we have to do is stop bemoaning what we can’t do and notice the things we can do. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
