Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

It’s going to be a sunny and warm Saturday on the mountain. Who knows when the next epic spring skiing day will be. Get up there and get it. Light snowfall is in the forecast Sunday and Monday, and then we’re back to sunshine for the early-mid part of next week. Models hint at a return to more active weather later next week.

For Saturday, it’ll just be sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ in the morning, 9000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. Max temps at 5000′: 40F. Wind: light in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and S 10-25 overnight.

Sunday starts clear and turns snowy in the afternoon. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and will fall to about 1000′ overnight. About 0.3” to 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for 3-6” new snow, mostly overnight. Wind: S 10-25 in the morning, S 5-15 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Cloudy and flurries stick around on Monday with the snowfall increasing in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and will rise to about 4500′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast, for an inch of new during the day. A trace is forecast overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, NW 20-25 the rest of the day at 5000′ with easterlies of various sorts from 6500′ on up. Clear, sunny weather returns for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies are happening to start Saturday: 10-15 at Rooster and Viento. Stevenson will take a little while to catch up, but you can expect 10-15 there too. After 1pm, the wind goes calm everywhere. River flow is 123kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast is 63F. Sunday starts with light westerlies. The wind turns to E 20-25 at Rooster and E 10-15 at Stevenson after sunrise, but you can expect drizzle there too. Between 2pm and 5pm, the wind goes calm everywhere. After that: gusty, drizzly westerlies at 22-26. High temp: 53F. Monday starts with 10-13 in the western Gorge and gusty 18-23 east of The Dalles. Don’t get too excited about driving east, because wraparound precipitation is likely to bring rain to the eastern Gorge. Despite that, models suggest gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Rufus after 2pm. High temp: 50F.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky sticks around all day. Temps will be near 30 early and in the low 60’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows. Sunday starts clear and quickly turns cloudy. Drizzle starts up around 11am and sticks around through evening. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light and variable wind. 87% chance of rainbows. Monday starts cloudy and stays that way. Drizzle arrives in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 50 later. Moderate westerlies. 76% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Trailbuilder request: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. So, skip GP and ride the brown pow that’s all over the rest of the trails. Excellent dirt is to be found in the lower sections of Post, on Syncline, at Nestor, on Hospital Hill, and probably at Columbia Hills (where there will be lots of Grass Widows and other early flowers). Remember: it’s still winter, and freeze-thaw is possible. If you hit freeze-thaw mud, please turn around so you don’t do permanent trail damage. Whoopdee is especially susceptible to freeze-thaw. Please avoid it until nights warm above freezing.
