Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mellow weather is on tap for Mt. Hood through Sunday afternoon. A system swings through from the south on Sunday night with snow likely but mixed precip possible. Light snow may continue Monday into Tuesday, but models aren’t all that excited about precip amounts. Total through Tuesday looks to be around 0.5” to 1.0” water equivalent. After that, temps at elevation stay low enough for snow through the end of the week, but there’s quite a bit of uncertainty in how much precip we’ll see.

Overnight Friday into Saturday, there will be just a trace of snow on the mountain. Saturday will be partly cloudy all day and mostly clear overnight. The snow level drops from 3500′ Friday night to 2000′ Saturday morning and rises back to 3500′ in the afternoon. Wind Saturday will be light SW in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and E 5-10 overnight.

Sunday will be clear to start, high overcast in the afternoon, and snowy (probably) overnight as a system swings in from the south. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ in the evening. It’s worth noting that models do drag warmer pockets of air inland with this system, so it’s possible there may be brief periods of rain or snain mixed in. Total precip depends on which models you look at. Generally they’re calling for 0.25” to 0.5”. Some drive precip rates up thanks to easterly orographics. For now, let’s say 3-6” of fairly dense, wet snow (temps at 5000′ will be somewhere between -2C and +1C) and get super stoked if the easterlies drive that up overnight. Wind: E 5-10 in the morning, SE 30 in the afternoon, ESE 35 in the evening, and S 15-25 overnight.

Light snowfall continues on Monday. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and back to 2500′ after midnight. Models give us about a quarter inch of water equivalent for 2-3” of snow in the day. Same overnight. Wind: S 15-25 early, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great weekend on the slopes!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
