Monday/Tuesday forecast.

High pressure off the coast Monday will combine with a heat low in the desert for another day of west wind through The Ditch. The 7am gradients were .09 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc), signifying you’re going to want to focus your attention on the central Gorge today. Continued after the chart… Today’s Gorge Wind –…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Monday started off with westerlies in the teens from Viento to Swell (and probably at Mosier) with single digits elsewhere. By mid-morning, we should have 18-22 from Viento to Mosier. As the day goes on and the desert heats up, we’ll see the wind pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier, with Doug’s and Rowena likely filling in later. Stevenson should see 18-22 after noon.

Tuesday starts off with a trough of low pressure in Cascadia, low pressure in the desert, and high pressure over the Pacific. That will result in a deep marine layer to start the day and a 10 degree drop in high temps between Monday and Tuesday. This is happening because I have school Monday morning and won’t get home in time to take advantage of the best wind. Anyway, expect 25-29+ from Mosier east to Arlington right off the bat. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 30+ from Mosier eastward.

Swell and Hood River are a trickier call for Tuesday. Most like the clouds will burn back enough that they’ll fill in with gusty 25-29 by late morning. Stevenson will start with cloudy 10-13 on Tuesday and pick up to gusty 20-23 in the afternoon.

Looking at Wednesday, models are showing strong high pressure off the coast and a light wind day in the Gorge. I’m not sure I’m buying that. Let’s go with 15-18 all day long with a chance of 18-21. Thursday looks light and variable, but much like Wednesday, the synoptic (big) scale picture suggests we’ll see at least some light westerlies. Wait and see, I guess.

If the long range forecasts are correct, and they often aren’t, the end of the week and the weekend look quite windy.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s come around again: the beginning of the week, when PSU crushes me into a little ball of overwhelmed and exhausted graduate student for 36 hours. That, of course, results in you not getting a forecast tomorrow morning, and it also results in my cat having the entire house to herself tonight.

(Last night she opened the bedroom door and woke me up in the middle of the night!)

Anyway, when times get rough, we get caught up in the in-the-momentness of the difficulties. While being in the moment is generally a good idea, present moment awareness needs to be balanced by a little piece of knowledge in difficult times: this too shall pass.

When we believe that with our whole heart, we stop struggling against the present. We accept it, allow it to progress, and eventually it will pass, mostly because we can’t stop Time. This doesn’t just work for 36 Hours of Grad School Hell. It works for painful emotions. The more you struggle with those, the more you want them to go away, the longer they will last. This approach works for loss: grieving is a process. The pain can be intense, but it will eventually diminish and change (but may stick around in some lessened form for many years).

The next time you find yourself in emotional hell (maybe some of you are there right now), take a deep breath. Yes, life feels crappy right now, and it’s hard and painful. But you’ve been through pain before and come out the other side. You’ll come out of this too, maybe not in 36 hours, but eventually. And in the meantime, do what you can to find a little light in your life (maybe get on the water…). Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
