Monday. Wow. What a beautiful weather week we have on tap!

DSC_3850-Edit-Edit
We ended up with quite a bit more new snow over the last 24 hours than I thought we’d see. I was expecting a total of 6-7” or so, and we ended up with 10”. That’s pretty awesome if you have the opportunity to go ride this morning, because it’s going to be sunny on the hill with a chance of some mid-level clouds this afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) today will be 500′ early and 5000′ this afternoon. Wind will be W 15-20 in the morning, becoming more northerly as the day goes on, and ending up at N 20-25 in the evening. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tuesday may be partly cloudy to start, but if it is, it’ll quickly clear off. The free air freezing level will be 4500′ early and 5500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NNE 20-25 in the morning and NE 25-30 in the afternoon. It’s possibly that NE wind will affect higher lifts, especially at T-line which is more susceptible to east wind.

Gorge Wind Forecast

I woke up this morning to a horrendous smell in my house. It didn’t take me long to find the source: my wetsuit, damp from yesterday at Arlington, hanging over my shower curtain. Gross, truly gross. It’s in my friend Mike’s old washing machine now, sloshing around in a toxic mix of Oxy-Clean and detergent. As for the wind, you can expect 10-14 through the entire Gorge this morning, backing off east of The Dalles this afternoon and picking up to 19-22 from Viento to The Dalles. If you are going to The Dalles, I hear that Cash n’ Carry has butter for under $3 a pound. Then again, butter is on sale for less than $3 a pound at Rosauers this week.

Anyway, expect light and variable wind to start the day on Tuesday. East wind picks up to 10-15 through the entire Gorge in the afternoon. Expect E 20-30 Wednesday morning, fading to light E after 2pm. Thursday looks light and variable.

Random Morning Thoughts

There’s something about sunshine at the end of a long rainy stretch (winter) that gives me an overwhelming case of FOMO. Fear of missing out. Maybe some of you have experienced this too? The need to spend as many minutes as possible outside under the blue sky, in the fear that this blue sky and these rays of sunshine will be replaced by more cold, gray weather.

You can relax a bit this week. That blue sky out there, it isn’t going anywhere. The sun? Same thing. Sticking around all week. Take a deep breath. Let yourself really know that this isn’t a momentary phenomenon. Sure, life is constantly changing, constantly evolving, but not much will change about the weather this week. It’s okay to spend a little time inside, because the sun will be here Monday through Friday, all day long.

Be well. Enjoy the sunshine. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I stepped outside to look at the sky around 6:10 this morning, and it was mostly clear with a view of the moon and a reddish star in the sky, perhaps the planet Mars, god of war. You can expect sun all freakin’ day today. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. It is in the upper 20’s to low 30’s in the Mt. Hood/Parkdale area this morning, meaning there’s probably some frost out and about. Moderate west wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday looks clear. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. The sounding model doesn’t predict frost, but I suspect we’ll see some anyway above 500′ or so. Light wind early, E 10-15 everywhere in the afternoon. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny as all get-up. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. East wind early. No wind late. No rainbows. Looks like we’ll see 70 degrees on Thursday and Friday. YES!

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m sure there’s some super awesome dirt on Hospital Hill and Syncline right now. Reminder: cows are out on Hospital, so NO DOGS. Not even your dog. Post? Well, it poured yesterday morning, so maybe this afternoon? If not, certainly for the rest of the week. Yeah. Tack alert has been issued for the greater Hood River area. As for road biking, it too will be off the charts this week, with high temps at 60+ and light wind Tuesday through Friday. And don’t forget about the Gorge Roubaix race and the Gorge Gravel Grinder this weekend out in The Dalles. In other bike news, the Gorge Roubaix race the weekend of April 3rd is still looking for volunteers. Sign up and help keep a good thing going.
