Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday’s late-day cooldown took way longer to materialize than expected, and hence the wind was less than expected. Hopefully you had a fun time on the river anyway! We’re looking at another breezy day today. Get it if you can. Tuesday and Wednesday are unlikely to be windy enough for windsports. Trying to make plans for next weekend? The ensembles think you should come to the Gorge – we should have wind Thursday through Sunday.

Taking a look at Monday morning…. Marine clouds have actually increased since I woke up an hour ago. This is thanks to a trough pushing inland. A deep marine layer will persist on the west side today; Stevenson probably won’t have fully clear sky at any point. This marine air, unfortunately, will make it farther east than we’d like, and that will cut down on the thermal gradients. So, yes, it’ll be windy today, but probably not nuking. Early pressures were 30.11/30.01/29.90 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.11. The wind was all over the place but mostly in the 18-23 range. Exceptions: Viento (of course) in the upper 20’s and Arlington reading low 30’s (which is actually mid to upper 20’s). Give things a couple hours to settle out. You’ll then find gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier, 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus, and 20-23 at Arlington. This holds through the day. Arlington should bump up to the 24-27 range late in the day. River flow yesterday was 110-203 kcfs and river temp is 71F. High temp forecast for Hood River is 75F, and it’s 83F for Arlington. If you’re headed out east today, consider stopping by Amayah’s Indian food cart in Biggs (take a left at the gas stations and head about 100 yards east). It’s awesome. They have a sister cart (Tadka) in the Coastal parking lot in The Dalles.

Ridging builds in on the east side on Tuesday and quickly drives temps upwards on both sides of the Cascades. That’s not what we want! Opening round of westerlies will be just 11-14 from Viento to Swell with 7-10 near Stevenson. Afternoon wind falls to light/variable from Swell eastward and holds at 10ish near Stevenson. High temp: 87F. Wednesday starts calm. Westerlies eventually pick up to 10-13 or so near Stevenson and perhaps Viento, but you’ll have to wait until late in the day for even that much breeze.

Looking into the extended forecast zone, we find a lot more wind: low 20’s on Thursday, mid to upper 20’s on Friday, low 30’s on Saturday, and mid 20’s on Sunday. That’s all subject to change, of course, but the ensembles are on board with enough wind for me (and I”m picky) along with a big day on Saturday. Have a great day on the river!

There’s a free weekly wing foil orientation at the Hook Thursdays in July and August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm brought to you by Wylde Wind and Water and CGW2. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
