Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)
I woke up this morning to still-smoky skies and not nearly as much wind as the models were predicting. That said, there’s enough gradient and enough action in the atmosphere today for the wind to pick up later. The 6am gradients were .10 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc).
That’s going to be enough for 13-16 from Viento to The Dalles early. Expect 20-23 by noon from Stevenson to The Dalles and gusty 25-29 by mid afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. The afternoon bump will result from a shortwave moving across the Northwest, and that’ll make the wind gusty and unreliable from Swell to Mosier with Stevenson and the Rowena section of river the places to be. Rufus, etc., will likely be up-and-down, but windy enough for you to get on the river.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.
Tomorrow sees a trough of low pressure settle off the coast, and that’ll knock the gradients down. Expect 13-16 from Viento to Mosier in the morning, backing off to 10-13 by midday and filling in at Stevenson and possibly the Rowena stretch.
An offshore low moves off the coast Wednesday for light wind in the morning. A shortwave late in the day will probably bump the wind up to 20-23. After Wednesday, models are struggling with the timing of shortwaves, making it difficult to predict the wind. The basic setup is light to moderate onshore flow with short periods of stronger wind.
Coast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/10-15/20-25, NW swell 6′ @ 11 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/10-15/25-30, NW 5′ @ 11. Wednesday: light wind, NW 5′ @ 9.
Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 17-20. Jones Wednesday, 13-16. Sauvie’s today, 8-11. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 10-13. Sauvie’s Wednesday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts
I have a very full life, and that means I don’t always hear right away about things that have happened in the Gorge. It broke my heart yesterday to hear about the missing SUP paddler from Miami, Andres Pombo. He’s just 20 years old and went missing on Friday, a day when many of us were out living life to the fullest in the strong wind and big swell on the Columbia.
If you haven’t heard, Andres went missing just west of Swell City. As far as I have heard, we are still looking for him. Please keep your eyes peeled if you are out SUPing, windsurfing or kiting today, especially if you’re doing a downwinder of some sort.
Someone on the iWind forums had a good point to share: nobody wants to be part of a recovery operation. It can be traumatizing. But please, if you’re the person who spots Andres, think of his family and how much they’d like to be reunited with him.
In the meantime, if you would like to help contribute to fly Andres’ family to the Gorge and cover the cost of any other expenses, please visit the Andres Pombo gofundme site.
I’ve only SUPed a couple of times. I’ve never done a downwinder, so I’m no authority on SUP safety. But the person who created the GoFundMe had these words to share for her friends: “Please everyone, remember to wear your leash and/or PFD. Your leash will keep you with your board. Your PFD will help keep you afloat if your leash breaks, you become entangled, or you are unable to remount. Please just shut up about it and wear it!”
We need community, not tragedy. Do your best to keep yourself safe, whatever sport you’re doing, so you keep your community from experiencing heartbreak. People love you, even if you don’t realize it. Protect them by protecting yourself. And go make a donation to the GoFundMe.
Gorge Weather Forecast
Unexpectedly, it’s still rather smoky in the Gorge to start the day, but I can see traces of blue through the smoke, so maybe it’s not that thick. As the westerlies pick up this afternoon, we’ll see the majority of the smoke blow away. Expect temps in the low 60’s early today and the mid 80’s this afternoon with light wind early and moderate wind late. Tomorrow starts with temps in the upper 50’s and finishes off in the mid 80’s with light wind. Wednesday starts with upper 50’s and light wind and ends up mid 80’s with moderate wind. Next chance of rainbows is Friday, but models are all over the place…

Road and Mountain Biking
It’s still smoky out there, but at least it’s less smoky than yesterday! If you’re going road biking this week, it’s probably damned if you do/don’t: Light wind on Tuesday means more smoke, and strong wind this afternoon and Wednesday afternoon means, well, strong wind. Maybe it’s a week for mountain biking?
