A touch of west wind is causing some ripples on the river this morning, and there’s enough gradient behind that wind that we should see a little bit of wind today before high pressure builds in later. The forecast is a little tricky this morning – clouds plus gradient plus building high plus passing front… At 7am, the gradients were .11 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). That suggests the strongest wind will be west of The Dalles today. It’s just a matter of how much. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
I think you can expect 16-19 by mid-morning from Swell to Mosier, picking up to 19-23 by early afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles and then backing off mid-afternoon as high pressure builds in.
Tomorrow starts off with 10-13 at Swell, Mosier and Rowena. We’ll see a slow, steady build during the day, maxing out at 21-24 from Swell to Doug’s in the afternoon. Stevenson, after a slow start, will join in with mid to upper teens.
Wednesday looks like 11-14 pretty much all day, and Thursday looks like a light wind day all day. Speaking of light wind, there were 25,499 Chinook that made it past Bonneville yesterday and there were 2161 steelhead that managed the same feat.

Random Morning Thoughts
What is considered just and what is considered right changes over time. Just this morning I was reading about changing marijuana laws in the NYT. There are 750,000 marijuana-related arrests across the country each year, and there are 40,000 people in jail for marijuana-related crimes (Rolling Stone, 2012). Is it just if people living in states where marijuana is now legal are suffering from marijuana convictions on their records? Convictions affect the ability to secure work, you know. Is it just if people are in jail for something that’s now legal?
The legal system doesn’t determine our own personal sense of right and wrong. But the changes in our legal system – legal marijuana, constitutionally-guaranteed right to gay marriage and interracial marriage, the personhood of corporations, the depathologizing of same-sex attraction – are food for thought.
We cling to our beliefs. They define who we are. But we, like the legal system and society at large, change our beliefs over time. Think back to the beliefs you held half a lifetime ago. We know we change, and yet, we stubbornly hold and defend our current beliefs. By recognizing that our personal beliefs have changed in the past and may change in the future, we allow for personal growth and for meaningful conversations with others.
So, be passionate about your beliefs. And be open to the possibility that they may change. Go have an awesome conversation with someone who holds different beliefs, and see what you can learn. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking
I have a report that Falls Creek is in excellent shape. Also, the north half of Surveyor’s and Dog apparently got some rain, and they are riding nicely too. As for the road, the pavement is still awesome. Expect light wind the next two mornings, with a touch more Wednesday and zero wind Thursday.
