Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies stick around for the next few days. Models hint at stronger wind through Saturday, and then they hint at heat to start next week or possibly end the weekend. The amplitude of the heat and the timing aren’t set yet, so hold off on those weekend plans for a little bit.

Let’s start with the beginning of the week. It’s Monday. Gradients at 7:30am were .09 pdx-dls and .06 dls-psc. Don’t make plans for the eastern Gorge; the wind will die off out there today as high pressure pushes inland and temps nearly equalize across the Cascades. This is all despite a very deep marine layer to start. Early wind will be 13-16ish most locations with Viento (as usual) much stronger and Doug’s (as usual) much weaker (7-10ish). We should see a period of 20-23 from Viento to Mosier from this morning to early afternoon. Stevenosn will join when the clouds burn off. Given the depth of the marine layer, it’s quite possible reality will beat the models by a few mph. As the metro area heats up mid afternoon, the wind fades to 14-17 or less from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow readings are 184-258kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 83F.

Tuesday will be calm for much of the day, probably through early afternoon. Models hint at thermals starting mid afternoon and building to 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 93F. Wednesday morning brings 16-19 from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 to Stevenson and 8-11 to The Dalles. That wind holds through mid-afternoon. Models currently suggest gradients will pick up in the evening as a trough approaches offshore. The timing of this will be key, and often ends up being later than expected. If it works out, we could see 22-26 from Hood River to Avery. Probably best not to count on it.

Stronger wind is forecast Thursday through Sunday, according to the GFS. Take advantage of that! The Euro brings a heat wave in starting Sunday (GFS timing is Monday). This could shut down the wind. So, like I said in the opening paragraph, it’s a bit too early to be making solid plans for the weekend. Give it a day or two to for the forecast to settle out. Have a great windy week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! It’s a busy week for sailboat racing in Cascade Locks: the Optimist Nationals are happening. The Gorge Paddle Challenge runs Friday through Sunday in Hood River.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
