Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and the general picture for the upcoming week is west wind of varying strengths and marine clouds of varying depths. As you can see this morning, the marine layer has made it to, and even past, Hood River. That’s knocked the dawn patrol wind down a lot from what we were expecting from forecasts of past days – this didn’t show up until the afternoon model run yesterday. Anyway, the 7am gradients started with .14 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc) with flow at 187kcfs and river temp at 67 degrees. The weather is being further impacted by a weak front moving inland.

So, for this morning, we’ll see westerlies at 19-22 or so from Cascade Locks to The Dalles with 13-16 further east. We’ll see the wind build to gusty 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus by late morning. In the afternoon, as the clouds burn off, the wind will pick up to inconsistent 25-29 from Cascade Locks to Rufus, with Roosevelt in the 23-26 range. My suspicion is that the wind will get steadier late in the afternoon as this front moves inland, allowing the atmosphere to stabilize a bit.

High pressure builds inland on Tuesday morning, leading to less clouds in the western half of the region and less cross-Cascade gradient. We’ll have 15-18 to start the day from Viento to The Dalles with 23-26 by late morning, lasting all day, from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Areas further east will remain in the 12-15 or less range on Tuesday.

A trough of low pressure moves inland to the north on Wednesday, pulling more marine clouds into the west side. As of this morning, the sounding model suggests we’ll have cooler marine air but not marine clouds in Hood River. That sets us up for 18-21 from Swell to The Dalles to start the day with 23-26 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. As I said at the start of this forecast, the overall picture looks good all the way through the extended, with wind every single day!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m feeling some time pressure this morning because I need to get a few hours of work done before I can get out and play. So, I’ll just leave you with a couple of sentences. That right there is the life of a grad student on summer vacation – nothing to stress about, so I create some FOMO about the wind and the dirt and the pavement. Anyway, there’s your reflection – how are you creating unnecessary stress in your life? (laughing at myself here). Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw some photos of off-the-charts wildflowers on Windy Ridge yesterday on Facebook, which sent me on a search for trail information. According to the Gifford Pinchot website, the Ape Canyon trail has snow on it one mile from the bottom. That report is from 6/28. As of 6/30, they are reporting “unknown conditions” on the Plains of Abraham. That said, there is a Strava ride of 1:34 from Ape Canyon to Windy Ridge yesterday. That’s wicked fast and suggests that the ride is open. Two other rides yesterday did the segment in just under two hours, also suggesting a clear trail. Now, I am not saying that the trail is open, but I am saying it’s possible. If you’re up for an adventure, give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

If you’d like to try out sailing, there Gorge Sailing Team members will take you out on a boat this evening for free at the Hood River Marina from 6 to 7:30. the other chance to try sailing is Thursday nights in Cascade Locks where you can take out a boat and eat BBQ for $5.

Other events today include meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine, $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Valley Adult Center at 2:30 and pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen at 6. There are tree free yoga classes tonight: 6 o’clock at Samadhi in White Salmon, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 YogaFaith (Christ-centered) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Those classes are “by-donation” so do chip in a few bucks (or more) if you can.

Coming up Friday through Sunday, Cascade Locks hosts the Gorge Skiff Regatta. The Gorge Outrigger Paddle race runs Saturday from Stevenson to Bingen for men and Stevenson to Drano Lake for women (ah, c’mon – we all know women are tougher!). The Wild Woman 50k, half-marathon and relay is in Trout Lake on Saturday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
