Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Sunday was a soggy, mostly cloudy one on the hill, although the sun did break through here and there. Snow conditions were slushy, and the weather was warm. We’ll have a dry day on Monday with temps pushing near 50 degrees. Rain returns late Tuesday, sticks around Wednesday, and transitions to snow Thursday afternoon. After that, we’re in for colder weather but not much precipitation for a while (unless something changes dramatically in the ensembles).

Monday’s almost certain to be a slushy one. For the snow to set up, we’d need clear sky Sunday night. Models aren’t calling for that to happen. So, wax warm. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ in the morning, 11,000′ in the afternoon, and 8500′ overnight. Models keep the high clouds around, but filtered sun is possible. Better than no sun, right? Temps at 850mb (5000′ or so) max out around +12C in the morning and +9C in the afternoon; don’t be surprised to see 50 degrees! Wind: SW 20-30 in the morning and SW 15-25 in the afternoon and evening.

Tuesday starts high overcast. Clouds thicken, and rain starts up mid to late afternoon. The snow level will be 8500′ early, 7500′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. Temps at 850mb will be +5 to +6C for slopeside temps in the low 40’s. Overnight precip looks to be about 0.2” rain. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, S 10-15 in the afternoon, and SSW 35-50 overnight.

Warm, rainy weather continues on Wednesday. As of the time of this forecast, models keep the bulk of the rain north of the Columbia River. If that changes, so will the rain amounts. For now. The snow level starts at 10,000′, drops to 6500′ in the afternoon, and falls to 5500′ overnight. About 0.2” rain is forecast during the day. That’s followed by a trace of rain or mixed precip overnight. Wind: SSW 30-50 early, SW 20-35 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 after midnight. Light mixed precip Thursday gives way to a few inches of snow with light to moderate wind. Flurries continues on Friday into Saturday with the snow level slowly and steadily falling down to 1000′ or so. We’ll leave it here for now. Enjoy!

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
