Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you like your wind strong and gusty, today’s the day you’ve been waiting for! Westerlies back off a bit on Tuesday, but will still be plenty strong. Get that Monday-Tuesday combo, because Wednesday looks like a no-wind day. According to the Riverkeeper swim guide, we still have poopy water at the Event Site and Hood River Waterfront Park. Also, river flow is extremely high. Please be cautious and keep an eye on others.

To start off Monday, we have offshore high pressure combining with a large trough of low pressure over the desert, Idaho, and western Montana. Early gradients were 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.11 (dls-psc). Today’s forecast will be east of the Cascade crest as intermittent drizzle falls west of Mosier. Viento, as usual with this kind of setup, will likely outperform models, but it will also be rainy. So, to start the day we’ve got 24-29 east of The Dalles, at Viento, and (just guessing) Mosier. Other locations are hovering in the 16-19 range. Give it a couple hours, and you’ll find 30-35 from Avery to Threemile. West of Avery, the wind will be very gusty and likely in the 16-19 range. River flow is 398-446kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is a miserly 60F, 15F below normal. If you want sun along with your wind, head to the desert.

Tuesday sees the offshore high pressure continue to drive westerlies through the Gorge. A low over northern Idaho sends plenty of high clouds over the region and also keeps the wind going farther east than would be expected given the positive tilt to the offshore ridge. Morning westerlies will be 18-22 east of The Dalles with 7-10 and drizzle to the west. Around midday, the wind will build to 22-25 from Mosier to Boardman with 11-14 west of Mosier. Afternoon: 24-27 from Lyle to Boardman with 10-13 to the west. There’s a decent chance we could see that prediction increase in tomorrow’s forecast. High temp: 63F. Sky: partly cloudy.

On Wednesday, high pressure dissipates and is replaced by a low approaching the coast. While it will probably be far enough away to leave us with sunny sky, it’ll be close enough to shut off the wind and even turn it light easterly for a while. High temp: 74F. Models hint that westerlies will return on Thursday and stick around. No promises that far out. Have an awesome couple days on the river!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
