Gorge Wind Forecast
If you’re into strong westerlies, today is your day. Westerlies fade the next couple of days, and the wind pretty much disappears Thursday and Friday. I’ll be disappearing for a week after that. I do believe the wind will be making its own choices for that week.
Looking at Monday, we have a trough moving into BC. The west half of the PNW responds with clouds and cool temps. Gradients were 0.16 (pdx-dls) at dawn with 0.07 (dls-psc) out east. Go anywhere today, perhaps minus Stevenson, and you’ll find very strong westerlies. Dawn Patrol was 25-28 from Viento to Swell plus Mosier. Other launches, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington, were 17-21. By midday, the wind builds to 28-32 from Viento to Mosier, perhaps to Doug’s. Wait until afternoon, and you’ll have 28-32 from Viento to Threemile with 22-26+ at Stevenson, depending on what the clouds do. River flow is 87,800cfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 71F. Arlington: 76F with a Red Flag Warning.
Westerlies back off on Tuesday as that trough moves off to the east and clouds lessen in the west. Daybreak wind will be 19-23 from Viento to Moiser with 11-14 to the west and east to Arlington. Stay closer to Hood River; the longest-lasting wind will be in the Corridor. By late morning, the wind settles in at 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon: 20-23 persists and fills to Doug’s with 17-20 at Rufus and 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 72F.
Wednesday looks lighter. Westerlies start at 8-11 from Stevenson to Viento, drop to “light” midday, and rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier (8-11 near The Dalles) in the afternoon. The eastern Gorge will be light all day. Thursday: light easterlies. Friday: light and variable. Have a great week!

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land.
