Monday. Unicorns n’ rainbows all week long. And wind. That’s how you get unicorns and rainbows, you know.

We’re off to a decent start this morning. Heck, it’s a decent start to what’s going to be a very windy week here in the Gorge. We’ve got some clouds in Portland, and we have strong gradients: .11 (pdx-dls), .09 (dls-psc), and .54 (eph-dls). What does this mean for today? Well, it’s going to be…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect the strongest wind today to be near Hood River in the morning and near Doug’s in the afternoon with every beach between Cascade Locks and Arlington joining the fun at some point. We’ll have 20-23 early from Viento to Mosier, picking up to 26-30 by late morning. It won’t take long before the Rowena stretch joins with 26-30, and you can expect 26-30 this afternoon near Rufus and 24-28 at Arlington. I’m a little concerned about the lack of deep clouds in Portland – that could cause the wind to drop early in the afternoon as the city heats up. Keep that in mind.

Tomorrow sees a trough of low pressure over the Northwest with unchanging weather during the day. That kind of stable setup usually gives us near-perfect wind, and with deeper marine clouds expected, the wind should hold steady through the day. Fingers crossed. Expect 23-27 for Dawn Patrol from Swell to Mosier, picking up to 28-32 late in the morning. Doug’s will join in by early afternoon, and Rufus and Arlington will join with 26-30. Expect unicorns and rainbows on Tuesday.

Wednesday sees the low pressure trough shift east, and that may dampen the wind quality. Even so, you can expect 15-28 in the morning near Hood River, picking up to 24-28 by midday and holding through the afternoon. Eastern Gorge beaches will join in too. Thursday looks like another 25-29 day.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/20-25, NW swell 5′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/15-20/30-35, NW 5 @ 9. Wednesday: 5-10/5-10/30-35, NW 6 @ 9.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 20-23. Jones tomorrow, 20-23. Jones Wednesday, 8-11 or less. Sauvie’s today, 10-15. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 12-15. Sauvie’s Wednesday, 5-8.

Random Morning Thoughts

Asking for what you want is tough. You never know how the person you’re reaching out to will respond. This is on my mind because I volunteer with a couple of nonprofits, and yesterday I reached out to two people with asks for those nonprofits. One of the asks, quite frankly, was a reach to the stars.

But you know what? Both people I asked got right back to me, one with a yes, and one with an, “I’ll look into it.” That’s pretty amazing. I’m deeply touched and encouraged about asking for things in the future.

We expect the worst sometimes (we’re actually wired that way for protection, but that’s another story). And we take into account our expectation of people’s reactions (again, we’re wired that way to maintain our social connections). But there are two things to remember when asking for what you need. One, a person’s negative reaction is about them, not you. Two, if you don’t ask, you won’t receive. Three, people like to help other people. Four, our expectations make asking scary, so if we can drop our expectations of what response we’ll receive, we’ll be less stressed about asking.

And those are your two/four thoughts of the day. It’s time to go windsurfing and kiting. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

Someone forgot to turn off the heater last night – it only cooled down to 69 degrees at Larry’s house. Expect temps in the mid 80’s this afternoon with strong wind. Tomorrow starts in the low 60’s and heats up to the upper 70’s. Strong wind. Wednesday looks exactly like Tuesday, and so does Thursday. No rainbows for the next 72 hours unless you make them yourself.

Road and Mountain Biking

The only thing I have to report is that the guys from Dirty Fingers pre-rode the Dirty Sellwood course yesterday in the heat: 117 miles, 10,000′ of climbing. That’s fine when it’s not hot, but not fine when it is hot. This whole week will be awfully windy for road biking, and there’s no rain in the forecast. So, pray for rain.

Upcoming Events

The weekly Monday events include free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, and community yoga at the Town Hall at 6:30. There’s another free yoga class tonight at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. Tonight’s also the night when you can hop on a sailboat – head to the docks behind Hood River’s DMV and the Gorge Junior sailing team members will take you and the family for a ride. There’s an Ezzy demo at Mosier today from 1 to 5:30 and one at Doug’s tomorrow from 12:30 to 5

This week is the Gorge Paddling Festival. You’ll find downwind races for OC1, Surfski and, um, other watercraft. According to their website, they have shuttles every day this week and races, including the Wildside Relay, scheduled for the weekend. Also this weekend, there’s longboard one-design windsurf racing in Stevenson and Hood River. They have20 rigs available to rent for $25 each, so if you don’t have the gear and you want to try it out, you can.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu, Manbo’s Fun Ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 5:15, a free yoga class at 8am at Flow, Triathlon practice at 6:15 at Mayer Park in Rowena, Community Yoga at 7pm at the Mosier Community Center, and my favorite, community mindfulness meditation at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon at 6:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
