Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A windy day is on tap today. We’ll have rest days Tuesday and Wednesday and potentially Thursday. Some sort of west wind is likely to return by Friday. Ensembles are mostly on board with a giant day next Sunday, but some members prefer the strongest wind to be next Saturday. Somewhere in the Saturday-Monday period, and potentially all the way through it, we’ll have wind. Given the no-wind forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, I’m going to take a rest day from forecasting Tuesday. It’s been a long time since I had one!

Let’s talk about Monday, shall we? Pressures started at 30.07/29.97/29.90 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.07. That screams “Doug’s to Rufus” to me. Add in the fact that marine clouds are past Hood River to start the day with warming forecast for the Columbia Basin, and you’ve got a recipe for out-east wind. Offshore high pressure isn’t all that strong today, but it’s better than offshore low pressure. We start with 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River and 21-24 from Mosier to Arlington. Models hint at a period of gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River this morning before a drop to 14-17. Areas to the east will shine today. Between Lyle and Rufus midday, and Lyle (maybe Mosier) to Boardman this afternoon, you’ll find 28-31. 30-33 this afternoon is not out of the question for that stretch of the Columbia. After 5pm, the wind starts to fade.: 23-26 or less from Lyle to Doug’s and 27-30 from Avery to Threemile with 22-25 to the east. River flow over the last 24 hours was 139-216kcfs (it tends to be lower on weekends than weekdays), river temp is 61.52F, and high temp forecast is 64F for Hood River and 67F for Arlington. It’s worth mentioning that the current at Rufus over the last 24 hours was only 155-216kcfs.

Tuesday starts with W 10ish through the entire Gorge. Heat equalizes over the Cascades, gradients shift west of the metro area, and the Gorge goes glassy by midday. Try the coast for best results. High temp: 74F. Wednesday sees hot weather settles in from the metro area to the desert. Gradients turn offshore. Strongest wind for the day will be mid morning at Stevenson, Iwash (Rooster) and Viento: 15mph out of the east. By afternoon, the wind turns calm. Break out the ski boat! High temp: 83F.

Extended: Not much happening Thursday – potentially some mid to upper teens late in the day in the Corridor (Tunnels to Hood River). Friday afternoon looks a bit stronger. Westerlies increase over next weekend and likely peak at “nuking” on Sunday if nothing changes. Six days would be a long time for nothing to change. Hold that forecast lightly, but do make Gorge plans for next weekend!
