Monday – Tuesday. Wind, no-wind, and sun!

2015-03-31_11-33-25 M=C-Edit-2
Ok, yesterday was utterly ridiculous. I considered, rather than saying “30+” on the forecast, saying 35-40. But that felt a little presumptuous, and in addition, would have been wrong, as the average climbed above 40 at both The Wall and Arlington yesterday. In a happy twist, local ski photographer Grant Myrdal ended up going to both The Wall and Arlington yesterday. He’ll be uploading photos here later on today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Why was yesterday so awesome? Well, there was strong high pressure off Vancouver Island. There was a low pressure system in Montana. A weak weather system moved through in the morning. It was a holiday, meaning many people couldn’t make it out. And Viggers made rhubarb-berry cobbler. And there were no Bighorn Sheep along the highway between John Day and Blalock Canyon. Those six things combined to make it an utterly epic day on the river.

If you’d like a more reasonable, accessible day, today will provide. Expect 21-24 early east of The Dalles (and probably at Mosier too). The wind should pick up to 24-27 mid-morning, lasting through mid-afternoon. The wind will likely be gusty from Viento to Hood River, given the marine clouds overhead. Best bet for steady wind will likely be Mosier to The Wall, as Arlington is probably going to drop off. As high pressure builds inland late this afternoon, we’ll see the wind drop to 16-19 in the evening pretty much everywhere.

Tuesday looks not windy at all. Like zero wind. Nothing. Not a stirring branch. It’ll be a great day to walk in the silent woods or spray chemicals in your orchard. Wednesday starts off with E 10-15 at Rooster Rock, with Stevenson possibly joining in midday. The wind will switch around to W 10-13 by mid-afternoon on Wednesday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I’m so sorry. Not much to report here today. In exciting news, the temp did drop below freezing last night, meaning the skiing at T-Line should be pretty good today. Expect actual corn snow, rather than slush. We’ll be back to slushy conditions tomorrow afternoon, though, as temps warm back up into the 70’s in the valley.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Mother’s Day, and I’d like to wish all of you a happy day today. Whether you’re a mom, a dad, or a person occupied with raising yourself, may you have a lovely day today. We all know what it takes to be a good mom: love, warmth, affection, and a commitment to the safety and well-being of children.

Not all moms can manage those things, sadly, but there’s something more important to remember than that: We all contain the ability to hold love and compassion for others. And we all contain the ability to hold those kind feelings toward ourselves. Many times, we forget. We beat ourselves up, we beat ourselves down, and we beat ourselves all over the place. That’s not good at all!

So, take a moment on this Mother’s Day to remember to treat yourself as would an ideal mother. Love yourself. Be kind to yourself. Be gentle with yourself in your lesser moments. Even if you have an awesome mom, it’s good to continue to be a good mom to yourself, because you deserve love and kindness. Have an awesome day.

Everyone’s favorite ride is open! In other road biking news, you’ll have utterly epic road biking conditions on Tuesday, all day, and on Wednesday in the morning. In trail news, there’s nothing new to report. Get the complete list of open trails here. Looking ahead to next weekend, Hood River County has a work party on the 160 trail. Meet at Binn’s Hill Staging area at 9am on Saturday.
