It’s going to be another sunny, windy day in the Gorge today, but before we get to the forecast, we have a PSA: Kiteboarding for Cancer is this weekend, Friday though Sunday. As always, they need volunteers to run this event. You can sign up to volunteer and earn karma points. Volunteering doesn’t just mean being there. You can bake cookies to help feed the athletes. But don’t eat the cookie dough, because you can get salmonella from the eggs and e. coli from the flour. Anyway, volunteer to make some goodies or to donate some time. Now, on to the forecast. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Monday started off with a few marine clouds over Hood River and wind in the single digits to teens, depending on where you were looking. Gradients were .06 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc) at 6am. The general picture today is weak high pressure inland and an approaching weak system late in the day.
Models seem to think we’ll see 16-19 this morning, with the wind concentrated at Swell and Arlington. The models suggest the wind will back off to 10-13 after noon east of The Dalles. That seems fine by me, but I think it’s possible we’ll see 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s this afternoon, late, as the front approaches. But I wouldn’t put money on it, FYI.

Tuesday starts off with a front moving through the Northwest. That’ll make the wind a little wonky to start, but the afternoon will steady right out as high pressure off the coast has a bigger impact. So, look for Dawn Patrol on Tuesday at 17-21 from Swell to Mosier. The wind will pick up to 23-26 by late morning from Hood River to Rufus, and further increase to 25-29+ from Swell to Arlington in the afternoon.
High pressure builds in on Wednesday. Models suggest 10-13 early with 15-18 midday, strongest near Hood River. However, models tend to underestimate wind with this setup, so it’s likely we’ll actually see 17-21 or so from Viento (Stevenson too in the afternoon) to Mosier.
I normally don’t do long-range forecasts because they can change so drastically. That said, as of right now, it does look windy Thursday-Sunday, happy news for KB4C (don’t forget to volunteer to bake cookies, at the very least!).

Random Morning Thoughts
I was sitting here this morning trying to figure out how I was going to get my huge suitcase of toys to school tomorrow along with my laptop and books and everything else. You see, I write the forecast on the Vanpool on Tuesdays, normally.
Then I realized that I could take tomorrow off from the forecast. Revolutionary – take a day off because it makes my life so much easier! See, I often assume I have to write a forecast every day, that people will be angry if they don’t have a forecast every single day. This, of course, is me projecting some wacky part of my past onto a bunch of chill wind and snow people.
We do this all the time, this projection thing. I see it a lot in grad school – so many of us think we have to be perfect (get 100%, get a 4.0, say brilliant things in class). We put a lot of pressure on ourselves, when the truth is that we’re only doing this because our parents/first job/early teachers impressed the need to be “the best” upon us. People liked us conditionally, and we’re still trying to fulfill those conditions.
None of us needs to be perfect to be liked. None of us needs to do “stuff” to be liked. All we have to do is be kind, be good listeners, and bake well (maybe not the last!), and people will like us on a deep and genuine level. That said, being liked doesn’t mean we’re going to get our needs met. People tend to like others who meet their needs (to be heard, to be seen, to be fed). So there’s a balance there, of course.
Anyway, my apologies if the lack of a Tuesday forecast inconveniences you. I, like you, am not capable of perfection. I like you even if you don’t read the forecast every day (see how ridiculous that sounds!), and I hope you’ll still like me even if I don’t write one tomorrow (and that sounds just as ridiculous). You’re awesome. Have an awesome 48 hours.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
There are a few little fluffy clouds in the sky this morning near Hood River, and more clouds to the west. Expect partly cloudy to mostly sunny sky for much of the day with high clouds later on. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tuesday starts out, oh, probably mostly cloudy with a few sprinkles possible during the day, ending in the evening. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind early, strong wind later. 72% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I went and inspected Post yesterday, and although it was super fun as always, it wasn’t tacky. For tacky dirt, you’ll have to head to the mountains where rain has been falling. And guess what? There’s another round of mountain rain slated for Friday. Wheeee! I have a report, by the way, that Ape Canyon (the awesomest of awesome rides) is now clear of fallen trees. Enjoy. No word on Gunsight.
Upcoming Events
Coming up today, there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon, Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, pickup kidckball at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park at 6, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga The Dalles at 6:30.
From 6 to 7:30 tonight, you can get a free ride on a sailboat with the Gorge Junior sailing club. Swing by the Hood River Marina to redeem this offer.
Looking at the rest of the week, the White Salmon Riverfest is on Tuesday and Wednesday with the annual community rafting trip down the lower-lower White Salmon for locals only on Wednesday. That trip is just $30. You can sign up by visiting Wet Planet’s website. Cooper Spur has short track mountain bike races this weekend and Kiteboarding for Cancer is in Hood River Friday through Sunday.
Have an awesome day today!
