Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Welcome to a five-day workweek stretch of wind. Windiest days should be Tuesday (out east) and Friday (near Hood River), but every day looks windy enough to get many of you on the river. Beyond Friday, there’s quite the range in possible outcomes. At this point, go ahead and ignore any wind forecasts beyond Friday – they’re not going to be reliable.

Monday starts with pressures of 29.94/29.87/29.85 for gradients of 0.07/0.02. We have a relatively stable setup: moderately strong offshore high pressure, clouds on the west side, and warming in the desert. Early wind was 12-15 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 or less to the east. Stevenson started below 10mph. Morning wind rises to 16-19 or a touch more from Viento to Hood River with 12-15 from Mosier to Doug’s. Late morning or early afternoon brings a bump to 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. Stevenson rises to 18-21. The Lyle-Doug’s stretch waits until early to mid afternoon to build. When it does, you’ll find 22-25 from Mosier to Avery. At that point, models hint that the Viento-Hood River stretch will drop to 17-20, but if clouds linger longer than expected, the stronger wind will last longer than expected. Those of you holding out for the executive session (after 5pm), will find 18-21 from Stevenson to Hood River with 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus and 17-20 at Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 60-94kcfs, river temp is 68.18F, and high temp will be 77F for Hood River.
Low and mid clouds push as far east as The Dalles on Tuesday. As this system pushes in around dawn, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 24-27 from Viento to Arlington with 19-22 to start the day at Stevenson. The west wide, Stevenson to Mosier, or maybe even Stevenson to Doug’s, drops to gusty 19-23 mid-morning and stays there. Head east of The Dalles for 28-32+ all the way to Arlington in the morning and all the way to Boardman in the afternoon. The Lyle-Doug’s stretch is going to be right on the edge of the clouds. If it’s cloudy, it’ll be gusty 20-23. If it’s sunny, expect 28-32 there. High temp forecast is 63F for Hood River, 71F for Arlington, and “delicious” in the Amayah’s parking lot in Biggs.

Clouds take their time dissipating on Wednesday. This starts us off cloudy with less than 10mph west of The Dalles. Out east, the day starts with 14-17 from Avery to Boardman. We’ll see a slow build to gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier; it’ll probably take until afternoon for the wind to rise in that zone. Between Lyle and Boardman, late morning westerlies rise to 20-23. Afternoon: 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus with 20-23 near Arlington and 14-17 near Boardman. High temp: 70F for Hood River and 73F for Arlington.

Extended: Models suggest we’ll see westerlies in the 20-24 range centered on Swell for Thursday. The ensembles hint at a stronger day on Friday, but they’re disagreeing about where you’ll find the wind. The deterministic GFS keeps the strongest wind at Swell and also keeps all the wind west of The Dalles. The Euro ensembles take the wind farther east into the desert. Beyond Friday, there’s just too much uncertainty in the forecast – some members have cool/wet/troughing and west wind, and some have warm/dry/riding and east wind. So, we’ll leave it there for now. Light west wind early. Moderate later. No rainbows.

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Check the Hood River County Foresty/Trails website for current Post Canyon area closures. Fire or fire danger closures: Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, most of Post Canyon, Gorge 400, trails around Mt. Adams. Dog River is closed for logging and rerouting until mid-September. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
