Monday: thunderstorms and several days of solid westerlies

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

After a week or so of lighter wind, stronger westerlies return for at least the next three or four days. Models disagree on the exact nature of the weather over the next week, meaning forecasts will have lower reliability than usual. That said, it does look like we’ll all be getting on the water!

For Monday, offshore low pressure starts to move inland this afternoon, ramping up the wind. However, the low’s movement and accompanying upper-level southerly flow will almost certainly trigger thunderstorms. That means the wind may or may not happen! Early morning wind starts at 12-15 from Viento to Mosier with 5-8 in other locations. The wind builds slowly to 18-22 midday, ramping up sharply mid-afternoon. Stevenson to Rufus, barring a shutdown from thunderstorms, climb to 25-29. Arlington lingers in the 12-15 range. It’s pretty darn likely the thunderstorms will impact the wind today. River flow is 128kcfs and temp is 64 degrees.

Models disagree on the location of that offshore low on Tuesday, but it does look like it will move far enough inland for plenty of marine clouds and increased gradients. The day starts with 13-16 everywhere. Afternoon westerlies build to 26-29+ from Stevenson to Rufus with 20-23 near Roosevelt.

Wednesday starts with 14-17 from Viento to The Dalles and picks up to 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery with 20-23 near Rufus and 10-13 at Roosevelt. Models are in fair agreement for Thursday with a forecast of 25-28. More divergence in predictions occurs starting with Friday, so I’ll leave it there for now.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Monday: NW5/LTNW/N10-15, NW swell 2′ at 8 seconds and SW 3′ @ 18. Tuesday: W5/NW5/20-25, NW 2′ @ 8 and SW 3′ @ 20. Wednesday: NW5/NW10/25-30, SW 3′ @ 18.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
