Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

Despite the innocuous-looking weather at 7am this morning, today’s actually quite complicated. An upper level low in motion off the Oregon coast combines with a little weather system this afternoon, southerly flow above, and high humidity. All those moving and unstable parts mean the forecast for the next couple of days is going to be a bit on the low end of the reliability scale.

That said, this morning started off with gradients of .04 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc) and .49 (eph-dls), giving us wind in the 5-10 range from Swell east to Rufus. Expect the wind to stay at 5-10 this morning and pick up to 10-13 midday. If we do see thunderheads build this afternoon – a likely scenario – we may see stronger wind for short periods near those storms. I’d like to remind you that thunderheads do contain lightning, and are therefore dangerous for people flying kites and holding on to long carbon-fiber poles. A helmet, while wise, will not protect you from lightning.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow also sees a very good chance of thunderstorms, making for another round of difficult forecasting. Expect westerlies at 10-13 from Swell to The Dalles for much of the day. Models are predicting an after-work wind jump to 17-21+, but it really depends on a lot of factors (marine push timing, thunderstorms, movement of upper low) and isn’t a guarantee.

The wind will pick up, way up, Tuesday night as a big marine push happens west of Hood River. The extent of those clouds Wednesday morning will determine the location of Dawn Patrol. Expect early-morning wind at 23-26+, likely from Mosier to Doug’s, possibly including Swell and Hood River too. By the afternoon, we’ll have gusty 26-30+. If nothing changes in the Thursday forecast, we’re looking at 26-30+ again that day.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: LTV, W swell 3′ @ 8 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/LTV/LTV, W 3 @ 7. Wednesday: S10/LTV/LTV, W 3 @ 7.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones the next three days: 10-13. Sauvie’s the next three days: LTV.

Random Morning Thoughts

Each morning as I sit here contemplating what to write, I say to myself, “What’s alive in me?” This morning I’m thinking about last night’s Bernie Sanders rally in Portland. “Shit,” I said to myself. “That’s political and progressive, and I don’t like to push my politics in the forecast.”

I think what’s important here is this point: I was really tired yesterday. Instead of going to Portland, I wanted to lie on my couch with a good book. But I believe it’s important to experience these large-scale political events, be they rallies, protests, or people hanging from bridges. I believe it’s important to be there.

Our political system is broken. The ads you hear, see and read are paid for by (mostly) corporations and millionaires. Seeing the power of the people directing the discussion can leave the average citizen (you) feeling hopeless and voiceless. When your voice is drowned out by TV, radio and print advertising, your body becomes your voice. Show up. Stand tall. Show others that they have company in the fight (whatever your fight may be).

By getting off the couch, you create community. Community creates hope. Hope inspires people to work for change. You don’t have to work for a campaign, but bitching in the silence of your own home, your local bar, or an internet forum isn’t enough. Get up. Show up. Let your presence speak to the world. And for fuck’s sake, VOTE.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a delightful morning: sunny, warm, and muggy with just a few high clouds. That will change this afternoon as southerly flow fires off thunderstorms (or at least convective clouds) over the region. It’s possible the storms, if they happen, could continue overnight. Temps will be in the upper 60’s this morning and low 90’s this afternoon. Light wind early, unknown wind late, 9% chance of rainbows, 74% chance of a colorful sunset.

Tomorrow will likely start out with colorful convective clouds, stay partly cloudy during the day, and finish up with another round of possible thunderstorms. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon (muggy, too). Light wind, 19% chance of rainbows, 95% chance of a colorful sunrise, 72% chance of a colorful sunset.

Wednesday looks sunny with a deep marine layer west of Hood River. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It is entirely possible that I’ll have something new to report in trail news after the next two days. There’s thunder in the forecast, and sometimes that brings rain. Or fire. Cross your fingers for lots of the former and none of the latter and stay tuned. In road bike news, this morning and tomorrow morning look AWESOME, with light wind and perfect temps, although it might be a little muggy.
