Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A shift in the overall weather pattern leads to a drop in the wind speed and quality for the next few days. If you, like me, are a bit beat up, you might find this helpful. If you’re raring to go, you’ll be seeking out gear that’s a bit bigger than what we’ve been using recently. Also, please stay away from Rock Creek in Mosier – a city official has requested I spread the word. Recreating in a level 2/3 fire evac zone is a bad idea for many reasons. The most important reason: you being on the water in that area interferes with aircraft scooping water.

Monday opens up with a lot of high clouds. That’s generally a sign that the wind will be gusty and unreliable. Pressures started with 29.92/29.86/29.82 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.04. A weather system is approaching, and it will bring a little much-needed drizzle to the west side. Head east for the best widn results today. Areas west of Lyle – Stevenson to Mosier – will generally stay in the 14-17 range today with a lot of up-and-down. Stevenson, where threre’s a decent chance of rain, will likely be a few mph less. You’ll find gusty 17-20 from Avery (evac order lifted) to Arlington (level 1) this morning before a dip, then a rebound. Afternoon westerlies rise to gusty 24-27 from Rowena to Arlington. Visiting? That’s approximately what the iWindsurf sensors will read, and they read higher out east than they do at the Hatch. Subtract 5mph. If you do head east, make sure you eat at Amayah’s Indian Curry and Kababs in Biggs. You will not be disappointed. River flow over the last 24 hours was 105-155kcfs, river temp is 70.16F, and high temp forecast is 72F for Hood river and 83F for Arlington.

Tuesday sees another weak weather system affecting us. Deep, very deep marine clouds start the day. Normally this would be super helpful, but the desert won’t heat all that much, and offshore high pressure won’t have much to add either. The day starts with less than 10mph west of The Dalles with 12-15 from Avery to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to 10-13 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 13-16 from The Dalles to Rufus. To the east: less. High temp: 76F for Hood River (cloudy, then partly cloudy) and 82F for Arlington (partly cloudy then clear).

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

On Wednesday, weak high pressure returns offshore, and the desert gains a few degrees of warmth. Most of the day sees west wind at 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River (calm to the east). Evening wind rises to 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 from Lyle to Doug’s. East: calm. High temp: 86F for Hood River.

Extended: Thursday looks light, variable, and hotter. Flatwater pop-up practice day! Dock start day! Expect smoke from the Microwave Fire to drift in to Hood River. Models have a lot of range for wind speeds from Friday onward, but they’re generally westerly and generally hinting at stronger wind for the weekend as offshore high pressure rebuilds and the desert gets hotter and hotter. Enjoy the clouds today. See you on the water!
