Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s looking like a light wind sort of start to the week, the kind of three-day stretch where your big kite, your slalom gear, or your foil board might get a lot of use. For Monday, expect W 5-10 to start with 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm. Tuesday sees high pressure build and then shift inland in the afternoon and evening. That will probably knock down the gradient a bit (as if the .02 start to Monday wasn’t light enough!).

We’ll see W 5-10 on Tuesday morning with W 10-13 after 3pm from Stevenson to The Dalles. Wednesday starts out calm (a perfect day to ride a bike to Portland!), picks up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento by noon, and gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Rufus after 3pm. Monday’s river temp is 52 degrees, and flow is a massive 470kcfs, way, way too much for the Maryhill stretch of river, and 200kcfs over the historical average.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It looks like a lovely first half of the week of corn skiing. Clear sky overnight will likely refreeze the snow (radiational cooling, yo) and create amazing riding conditions. The free air freezing level today (Monday) will be 10,000′ all day and 8000′ after midnight. Wind will be NW 10. Tuesday looks sunny. The FAF will be 8000′ early and 12,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10-15 during the day and SW 15 after midnight. Wednesday looks clear in the morning with the potential for some convective clouds in the afternoon. The FAF will be 12,000′ all day and 10,000′ after midnight. Wind will be SW 15-20 during the day and S 20-30 after midnight. Thursday starts out clear, turns rainy midday, and sees an inch or so of snow overnight.

Random Morning Thoughts

This morning’s random thought is a random public service announcement. Just a friendly reminder that there are ticks in the Gorge, and that there’s also Lyme Disease in the Gorge. These little buggers, ticks, not the spirochetes, are quite friendly, and will happily latch on to you or your pets for a meal. The Folks at Bay Area Lyme are doing research on ticks, and would love to test your ticks for you for free. It won’t necessarily happen fast – as you can probably imagine, lots of people want them to test ticks – but your tick will help BAL create a map of tick diseases across the USA. That is all. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I happen to thing weather doesn’t get much better than this. Expect sunshine all day today. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Tuesday looks very similar: sunshine, mid 40’s start, mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks a little muggier. Sunny early. Partly cloudy in the afternoon. 50 degrees early and upper 70’s in the afternoon, .01% chance of rainbows. Next chance of rain is Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like a beautiful day for road biking and mountain biking. Remember, Dog River is now open! In road biking news, there are two rockslides on the Rowena Curves, and Highway 30 is closed at this time. Check Tripcheck.com before attempting to ride that route! Other road biking will be lovely today with light wind and a high temp of 71.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events are all quite mellow: meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine and 7pm at Bethel Congregational in White Salmon. There’s free yoga tonight at 6 at Samadhi in White Salmon, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Balance that out tomorrow with a high-energy communmity dance class at the White Salmon Grange at 11am and pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:45.

Events this week include an all-day work party on the Aguspurger Trail, put on by the Washington trails Organization. The Hood River Area Trail Stewards have a work party meeting at Family Man in Post Canyon at 9 on Saturday. There’s also a free half-day meditation retreat from 1pm to 5pm at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday.

There are two races this weekend: the Cascade Chainbreaker mountain bike race in Bend and the Stevenson to Carson running race, going the hard direction this year. That running race is about 10 miles with 2300′ of climbing.

Have an awesome day today!
