Meet Temira,
your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

Temira with a giant pumpkin at Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today's snow forecast visualization
“While we’re rocking spring vibes through Wednesday (temps hitting a toasty 50°F!), weekend weather’s doing a cool flip. Models hint at possible snowflakes Saturday night as temps dip to freezing. But don’t break out the powder boards yet – it’s just a brief winter tease before warmth returns. The real winter show might start after next week! Meanwhile, today’s serving up sun-kissed groomers with a side of light breeze. Get some!” – Claude’s Over-the-Top Forecast Summary

Hey skiers and snowboarders! Sunny, warm weather continues on the mountain through Wednesday, and then the pattern finally shifts. In a positive twist, the Euro and GFS made a u-turn and decided to knock temps at 5000′ down to 32F or a couple degrees lower for about 48 hours starting Saturday night. Will we see snow out of this short period of cool-enough weather? It’s not quite clear yet; if we do, it’ll be on the tail end of the system, and then we’ll have several more days of warm weather before winter returns. Those signs of winter returning are pretty clear, at least as of this morning. Fingers crossed!

There will be no winter today, other than the winter that’s already on the ground and being groomed for your shredding pleasure. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day with temps at 5000′ maxing in the mid 40s. Wind will be SW 5-10mph all day. Tuesday looks very similar, but slightly warmer: temps max in the low 50s. Wow! That’s almost T-shirt weather! Wednesday also looks sunny and warm with temps rising to the upper 40s and light SW wind.

This pattern finally starts to degrade on Thursday as a weak system pushes in. It’ll be cloudy all day, but it’s unclear if this system will have enough oomph (models are all over the place with a trace to 0.5” precip) to rain on the Mt. Hood party. The snow level will be around 9000′ all day, so any precip that does arrive will fall as rain. Wind: 30mph or so out of the west.

A stronger system is forecast Friday into Saturday, but temps in that period are almost certainly going to be too warm for snow to fall. At the tail end of this, perhaps Saturday afternoon or evening, temps drop. As of this morning, it looks like there will be at least some moisture left, meaning we could get some snow! Yay! Temps warm up again next Monday for a few days, and then, finally, turn cold enough for snow and stay there. Have a great day on the warm, sunny slopes today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies continue! Monday morning pressures were 30.31/30.46/30.47 for a rousing east gradient of 0.15. The wind started with 47 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 15 at Stevenson, and 20 at Viento. Viento holds pretty much all day. Stevenson rises to 25-30 mid-morning and drops to 20-25 after 1pm. Iwash drops to 35-40 around 1pm and holds through the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 89-142kcfs, river temp is 49.4F, and high temp forecast is 42F with Nothing in Hood River and sunshine east of Home Valley.

Tuesday starts with 45 at Iwash and 30-35 at Stevenson. The wind holds until noon or so and then begins to drop. Stevenson finishes with 25mph, and Iwash wraps up the day with 35-40mph. High temp: 41F with Nothing in Hood River and sunshine east of Home Valley. Wednesday starts with 45mph at Iwash and 25mph at Stevenson. The wind rises to 30mph at Stevenson for a few hours mid-morning. Afternoon: 25mph at Stevenson and 35-40mph at Iwash. High temp: 40F with Nothing in Hood River and sunshine east of Home Valley. Lesser easterlies are forecast Thursday, and not much happens Friday. There’s quite a bit of range in the forecasts for that period, however, there are some signs of a possible eastern Gorge, west wind day on Saturday or Sunday. Stay tuned. Have a great day today. If you’re heading to the river, keep a close eye on your buddies, and use your safety gear!

Cycling Update

It’s wet and muddy out there. Please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Make Today Awesome!

Whether you’re shredding fresh powder on Mt. Hood, surfing swell on the Columbia, or just enjoying our stunning home… remember that every day here is a gift. Make the most of it.

Have an absolutely epic day out there!
