Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong westerlies are on tap today, but a combination of dynamic factors will insert a bit of gustiness and unreliability into the picture. Westerlies continue through at least Wednesday with cooler temps and intermittent chances of sprinkles.

Looking at the Monday details, we find a cold front approaching from the NW and a weak low predicted to head into BC this afternoon. Gradients start with an impressive .16 and .07. For the first half of the day, westerlies build to 24-27 from Mosier to Avery. Swell and Hood River are wild cards depending on the low clouds. Viento to Hood River should be 21-24 with a shot at 24-27 this morning. East of The Dalles this morning, you’ll find 14-17. Looking at this afternoon, we see the front pushing more clouds into the western Gorge. Shift your attention east, and you’ll find 28-32 from The Dalles (or maybe Lyle) to Threemile with the wind decreasing to 14-17 west of The Dalles. River flow is 228kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 69F.

Tuesday starts with clouds past Hood River and sun in the desert. Dawn Patrol westerlies will be 8-11 in the western Gorge and 19-23 from The Dalles to Threemile. Models suggest the western Gorge will stay in the 10-13 range all day. East of The Dalles, westerlies slowly build to 23-26. High temp for Hood River: 62F.

Wednesday morning looks chilly and calm with partly cloudy sky. Weak surface convection (instability) in the afternoon could decrease wind quality. Here’s the forecast: light and variable in the morning all through the Gorge. By midday, westerlies climb to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. It appears they’ll hold in the west and pick up to 21-24 from Mosier to Avery. Complicated weather and lack of model agreement for the latter half of the week makes for guesswork from Thursday onward. Let’s pass and see how things shake out in tomorrow’s model runs. Have a great day on the river!
