Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

We’re down to one ski resort now, and as such, we’ve nearly come to the end of the daily snow forecasts. I’d be skipping it today, but I haven’t had the time to rearrange the website and email. So, here we go! Timberline is all that’s left for lift-serve, and Teacup had their last day of grooming yesterday. Don’t let any of that stop you from hiking for turns or XC skiing your way to happiness. We’ll have cool, sunny weather for much of this week followed by snow on Thursday, cool weather on Friday, and a (potentially) warmer, wetter system for the weekend.

Monday will be sunny and cool, but the sun will be strong enough (it’s May!) to affect snow quality. Get it early. Also, there is as slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, so be cautious about your plans. The free air freezing level will be 1500-2000′ this morning, 3500′ this afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon, and W 10-15 overnight. Snow quality: powder in the shade, packed powder where it’s been skied, and warming, dense snow in the sun. Do be cautious about your slope choices, as the warming will contribute to avy danger.

Tuesday will be sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 4500′ overnight. No precip. Wind: W 10-15 all day becoming variable to 10mph overnight. Wednesday will be clear in the morning and evening with instability in the afternoon and clouds overnight. The FAF will be 4500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, 3500′ in the evening, and 2000′ overnight. Wind: variable to 10 in the morning, variable to 15 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 overnight. Up to half a foot of snow is forecast during the day on Thursday. After that, we’re looking at warmer, potentially rainy weather, but models are far from agreeing. Have a lovely time in the snow this week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Dynamic weather continues for the next week, and that keeps the gusty, moderate-strength westerlies around. Monday starts with gradients of .07 and .08 with westerlies mostly in the upper single digits to low teens. By late morning, the wind builds to 22-25 between Lyle and Rufus with gusty 14-17 between Stevenson and Lyle (Mosier could over-perform) and 12-15 east of Rufus. If you hold out for the mid-afternoon session, you’ll find 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington with 14-17 between Stevenson and Lyle. River flow is climbing: 261kcfs today (remember that Rufus maxes out somewhere in the 300-320kcfs range). River temp is 51F (it dropped again!), and high temp forecast is 54F.

Offshore high pressure strengthens (briefly) on Tuesday. A light start (less than 10mph in the west and 10-15mph east of The Dalles) gives way to stronger afternoon westerlies. Midday wind will be 11-14 from Stevenson to Doug’s with light westerlies east of The Dalles. From mid-afternoon on, westerlies jump up to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 11-14 at Avery and less than 10mph east of there. High temp forecast is 59F. An approaching front on Wednesday afternoon drives what little wind we’ll have. The day starts with 8-11 all through the Gorge. Midday: 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. Evening: gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Maryhill. Dynamic weather continues through the weekend, most likely, with no sign of anything resembling a “Classic Gorge Setup.” Have a great week!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky this morning stays that way, and we could add some instability-driven showers with potential small hail this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 19% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be clear and sunny. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 50’s later. Light westerlies most of the day. Moderate in the afternoon. No rainbows. Wednesday will be clear in the morning with a slight partial Nothing. Afternoon: instability with partly cloudy sky and potential showers. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 60 later. Light to moderate westerlies. 26% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for approximately 10 days due to nearby timber harvest. Do not enter that area for your safety. Also, Post is too wet too ride right now, so just don’t! Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting this summer, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Speaking of trails… it’s too muddy to ride them right now, and it will stay that way for a while. If you ride wet, sloppy trails, you will do significant and potentially permanent damage. Please don’t. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Recommendation: ride gravel roads and pavement for a while until the trail systems dry out.

The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
