Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A little bit of west wind today gives way to more west wind tomorrow and then a calm day on Wednesday. You’ve got an opportunity to try all sorts of activities! Monday’s starting off with light easterlies thanks to a low offshore. As a front swings through, westerlies return. They’ll pick up to gusty 13-16 or a touch more east of The Dalles out to Arlington. Briefly. Late morning to early afternoon is your window. River flow yesterday was 74-124kcfs, river temp is 57F, and high temp forecast is 55F.

Tuesday sees a low move inland and high pressure build in behind it. If this weren’t happening so quickly, it would be better, but it’s going to be good enough. Expect gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Arlington to start the day with rain as far east as Rowena through mid to late morning. Once this system zips eastward, the Mosier to Rufus stretch rises to gusty 24-27 under mostly sunny sky. Briefly. Arlington may also join. Models have the strongest wind between 10am and 1pm. Drive pre-emptively. The wind falls to the low-mid 20’s later in the afternoon. That said… there’s a LOT of spread in the ensembles regarding wind speeds tomorrow. It’s possible we could see more / longer lasting / less… High temp: 53F.

Wednesday starts with light westerlies. Stevenson may hold on to 10mph or so for most of the day, but the rest of the Gorge will be either light or calm. High temp: 54F under mostly sunny sky. Thursday currently looks cloudy and dry (until 4pm or so) with widespread light easterlies. That’s enough for now give the lack of consensus in the models. Have an awesome day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Happy Monday morning, everyone! It’s snowing at 6000′ this morning, and the snow level is forecast to drop this afternoon. We’ll pick up some snow down to 3500-4000′ this week. Through Friday, the forecast is reliable. After that? Too much uncertainty to make a call on the weather. Will you be able to pop your pup in the car and play in the snow this week. Definitely! Will you be able to ski? Not sure…

Monday kicks off with mixed precipitation at 5000′ and snow at 6000′. As I said in the previous paragraph, the snow level will drop some today. It starts around 5500′, falls to 5000′ in the afternoon, and drops down to 4500′ overnight. During the day, we’ll have 0.5” water equivalent (WE) mixed precipitation. Call it a few inches of snow at T-Line base and a trace below. Overnight, models are calling for an inch or more of WE with orographic assistance. Up to a foot (or more – there’s some variation in model predictions) of snow is likely above 6000′. At 5000′, 3-5” of dense, wet snowfall. Wind will be SW 15-25 this morning, SW 25-40 this afternoon, and W 30-35 overnight. That west wind should help the snow pile up in the leeward slopes – you know, the bowls you like to shred!

Tuesday starts semi-stormy. Wind and snowfall continue through the afternoon. The snow level will be 4500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight, by which time the snow will have stopped. About 0.4” WE is forecast for the daytime. Call that 4-5” of new. After sunset: just a trace. Wind will be W 30-35 in the morning, WNW 30-40 in the afternoon, and NW 20-30 after midnight.

Wednesday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ in the morning. In the afternoon, temps rise to 0C/32F as high as 6000′. The FAF rises to 7000′ overnight. Wind: NW 20-30 early, W 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 after midnight. Thursday starts high overcast. The next round of snow (snow level 5000′ falling to 3000′) arrives in the early evening. It’s not yet clear how much snow will fall, so we’ll leave this here for now. Looking deeper into the future, our two main models diverge. One looks much wetter than the other. Drafting a forecast is no better than guessing at this point. Let’s wait a few days and see. Cross your fingers for the next few days. It sure would be fun to make some turns!

Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th .
