Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow, Tuesday, starts off with low clouds and blue sky, but quickly clouds up with snowfall starting by 10am. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, dropping as low as 500-1000′ in the afternoon. However, the incoming system is relatively warm, so tomorrow’s snow will be pretty dense, most likely. We’ll see .4-.7” WV between 10am and 4pm, for 4-7” of new snow. We’ll see another .4-.6” WV overnight for 4-6” of new snow. Wind tomorrow will be S 15 in the morning and S 30 in the afternoon, switching to W 40 after 10pm.

Wednesday sees flurries in the morning, sunshine early in the afternoon, clouds in the evening, and precip after 7pm. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. It’s hard to say how much precip we’ll receive – that really depends on the exact storm track and how much this weather system splits. That said, as of right now, we’re looking at a few inches of snow followed by a couple inches of rain through Thursday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I haven’t been sick for a couple of years, but I’ve finally been taken down by a virus (which means I may take a couple days off from forecasting this week). If you’d like to hear the humorous impact of this virus, you can call the Meadows snowphone early this morning before someone else’s voice ends up on there.

Anyway, I’m almost excited to be sick, because Oregon has a new sick leave law. Employers with more than 10 employees are required to provide at least 40 hours of paid sick leave. Employees can use that time to care for themselves for physical or mental illness, for family members, in the case of a death in the family, for medical appointments and for time off related to domestic violence. Employees can also donate sick leave time to another employee if the employer has a policy allowing that.

Compared to sick leave policies in the rest of the world, this law is laughable – 98 countries provide a month or more of paid sick leave annually (Heyman, et.al., 2007). But Oregon’s law is a start. It allows people, rather than getting their coworkers sick, rather than getting customers sick, rather than working when they should be resting, to stay home and recuperate. It’s better than our previous punishing approach: Work sick or we’ll dock your pay. This is a compassionate policy, and goodness knows we need more compassion in the world. Be kind. Be well. Use your sick leave. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy start to Monday here in the Gorge. It’s possible we’ll see some sunbreaks today, and it’s likely we won’t. We’ll see some sprinkles this evening after a mostly dry day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. 4% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off mostly dry and rains from 10am on through the evening. Temps will be in the mid 30’s in the morning and low 40’s in the afternoon. It’s likely the upper valleys will see snow between 2pm and midnight. East wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Wednesday looks showery in the morning, dry with sunbreaks midday, and quite wet after 7pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. West wind in the morning, east wind in the afternoon. 98% chance of rainbows. At this point, Thursday looks very wet, but the path of the incoming storm system could impact the amount of wetness.

Road and Mountain Biking

What’s not snowy is muddy, and that includes Syncline, so please leave it alone or you’ll do some major trail damage. What’s not muddy is under snow. Post is snowy starting from the bottom. Your best bet is road biking or gravel grinding.

What’s the best way to help your muscles recover from a day on the mountain? A rejuvenating massage from Holistic Massage of Hood River. Specializing in injury treatment and pain relief, they’ll work out your knots and get you ready to go play in the snow again. Open 7 days a week and until 10 pm most evenings so you can fit massage into your busy lifestyle. Want to win a massage? You gotta be on the mailing list for that!

Upcoming Events

Today is a holiday, and that means I’m not sure if the regular events are happening. Here’s the list, in case they are: Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Community yoga at Samadhi at 6:30. Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Coming up tomorrow, there’s pickup rugby at the ball fields by the Hood River Pool at 5pm, Zumba at the Parkdale Community center at 6:30, and meditation at Samadhi at 6:30. Tonight is Rotary Ski Night at Mt. Hood Meadows. Cheap night skiing, and the proceeds benefit the Hood River Rotary Club. Pick up a ticket now, and support Hood River Rotary.

Have an awesome day today!
