Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

It’s pretty much dead calm out there this morning, which is great news for orchardists and fishermen and wakeboarders and SUPers who like light wind. You can expect no wind at all today. Tomorrow brings east wind at 10-13 at Rooster Rock and Steven’s Locks with very light east wind everywhere else.

Wednesday starts off with light easterlies at 10-13 at Rooster and Stevenson. By midday, the wind will switch around to westerly and slowly build. The timing and strength of the wind depends on when a trough moves down the coast and encourages the heat low to shift east. That said, models are currently predicting the wind will build to west 23-26 by 5pm from Stevenson to Rufus on Wedneday.

Random Morning Thoughts

DSC_4963
Getting around Hood River efficiently requires the use of lots of freeway on- and off-ramps. Sometimes this is a pain, but this time of year it can be quite fun. Why? Because it gives me (and you) a chance to interact with the Guys With Signs.

We’re blessed here in Hood River; our Guys With Signs are interesting, friendly, positive guys. Perhaps you’ve met Dwight, Larry or Kai? Next time you have the chance, roll down the window and say hello, or at least wave. Or even better yet, keep some leftovers in the car and hand them over to these guys. Or bake them something special. No, not that kind of special (420), although it is legal to do that in Oregon…

You may think they should “get a job”, but there’s a nice reframe you can place over their current means of support: by standing on the off-ramp, these mendicants are offering you the chance to look at yourself in the mirror of your reaction to them. Do you despise them? Are you inspired by them? Do you judge them or accept them? Whatever reaction you have, ask yourself why you are having that reaction. You’ll learn something important about yourself.

In addition, Dwight, Larry and Kai are giving you a valuable opportunity. They’re offering you the chance to experience selfless generosity. Or kindness to a stranger. Or recognition of someone’s hardships. Or… you fill in the blank!

So, next time you’re at a red light, roll down the window and say hi and hand over some food. You might just make a new friend and in the process, change your worldview.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have clear, smoky sky this morning and a hot day on tap. Expect temps in the mid 50’s early and the low 90’s this afternoon with light wind. Tomorrow looks similar with upper 50’s early and mid 90’s in the afternoon and light wind. Expect temps in the upper 50’s Wednesday morning with light wind. By Wednesday afternoon, we’ll have mid 90’s and increasingly strong west wind. No rainbows for the 72 hour period.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re interested in bike touring, Oregon State Parks has a great event this weekend, Let’s go Bike Touring. They’ll teach you how to plan a tour, and they’ll give you some information about how bike touring impacts the planet and communities. You’ll need to provide your own lunch, but they’ll have some bikes available if you don’t have one. RSVP’s are required. Visit the link above for more information.

In other news, it’s smoky out there, but it’s a nice cool, light wind morning for a bike ride. Expect more of the same tomorrow and Tuesday.
