Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Apocalyptic smoke sticks around the Gorge this morning, but it’ll begin to leave with the incoming westerlies this afternoon. Tomorrow’s forecast has wind, but also quite a bit of uncertainty. Same goes for Tuesday: wind will be here, but just how much is a bit unclear. Lesser wind is forecast for the second half of the week, which will be more marked by humidity and thunderstorm potential than river-level wind. Mark your calendars for Sunday the 27th, the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Yesterday’s smoke killed our low-probability afternoon wind. Why? No heat in the desert. Today’s weather, once again, will be affected by the smoke and the high clouds above the smoke. Early pressures were 29.83/29.74/29.75 for gradients of 0.09 and E0.01. West wind was just starting to pick up at the time of this forecast; Viento was 20ish, and the Hatch was 5-10. Other locations were light and variable. To be honest, it’s tricky to forecast with all this smoke. The deterministic GFS (our go-to) likes the idea of 22-25 today, but the ensembles of the ECMWF are far less enthusiastic. Let’s go conservative today. By early afternoon, look for 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 15-18 from Lyle to Doug’s. Areas west of Moiser dip to 16-19 in the afternoon. As the smoke clears, we could see 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s and may even see Rufus join the fun. No promises. We really need some heat in the desert to make this happen, and that’s questionable today. Stay away from areas east of Rufus; the remnants of Hurricane Hilary will create instability and southerly or SW wind in the eastern desert. River flow yesterday was 99-180kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 81F. Want less smoke? Wait until after noon for best results.

Moving on to Tuesday… we have a trough moving inland and a low approaching the Oregon coast from the north. High pressure gives just enough offshore support to keep the wind going. Early in the morning, you’ll find a wall of marine clouds to the west of Hood River. Thanks to the inland trough, the desert will struggle to contribute much heat. Early wind will be “light” west of The Dalles and will be in the 19-23 range from The Dalles to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River, 19-23 from Mosier to Arlington (eventually – you may have to wait a while for the far eastern desert). Do keep in mind that instability will be present in the far eastern areas of Oregon/Washington. That could affect wind quality east of Rufus. High temp for Hood River: just 74F.

Temps (mostly) equalize across the region on Wednesday. Light west wind early gives way to 10-13 from Stevenson to Arlington in the afternoon. I guess that qualifies as “light” as well, although some of you with big gear may find your way to a foil session somewhere. Uncertainty increases as we move deeper into the forecast, but there’s not a consistent signal for westerlies again until the start of next week. Cross your fingers for today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
