Monday: relief is in sight… but not yet…

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A The heat wave continues for the Gorge for a few more days, but west wind will slowly build from day to day. Models disagree on the end of the heat wave, and also on the return of strong westerlies. In addition, thunderstorm chances increase every day, peaking on Thursday. The instability may have an impact on the quality of the wind.

For Monday, the 5am gradients were promising: .06 pdx-dls and .01 dls-psc. While the pre-dawn wind was in the light and variable range, we”ll see westerlies climb today. Morning wind will be in the 10-13 range from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon westerlies rise to 13-16 from Stevenson to Moiser. High temp today will be 98 degrees or so. Stay hydrated! River flow is 143kcfs and temp is 70.

Model predictions start to diverge on Tuesday. Morning wind will be in the 12-15 range from Stevenson or Viento to Hood River. Afternoon westerlies peak at 16-19 according to one model or 19-22 according to another. Either way, enough for you to cool off, as the high temp will again be in the upper 90’s and the humidity will be high for around here.

Models really start to diverge on Wednesday. A weak weather system adds some oomph to the gradients, but atmospheric instability takes away some of that kick. Models are all over the map – the Euro likes 21-24, and the GFS likes 28-32. With a high temp of 91 degrees on Wednesday, it’s likely we’ll see stronger wind than Wednesday, but how strong is anyone’s guess at this point.

Models do agree on a bigger day Thursday as temps cool off. Call it gusty 28-32+ for now with a good chance of 30-35. The only monkey wrench Thursday is significant instability, both in the upper atmosphere and near the surface. Thunderstorms are likely. It appears that westerlies of some sort will continue through the weekend, but there’s a lot of model disagreement still on specifics.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Monday: NW5-10/NW5-10/N20-25, SW swell 1′ at 15 seconds. Tuesday: NW5-10/NW5/NW10-15, SW 3′ @ 18. Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning gives way to elevated thunderheads this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday looks clear in the morning with thunderheads in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 90’s in the afternoon. Muggy. Moderate westerlies. 2% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. Family Man is also closed, as is access to it, meaning you will need to choose other routes to Upper Post. Red Hill Road is theoretically closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Chip sealing will happen on Highway 30 between Mosier and Rowena Crest August 12-14. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community activities include $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30 and $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6. The Gorge Junior Sailing Team offers free sailboat rides tonight at the Hood River Marina from 6 to 7, and there’s free Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-Valley Elementary.

If you’re out in Post Canyon this week, remember that the Family Man area is closed to all access due to road improvement work. Other Post news is that the Post Canyon 50k ultramarthon is this Saturday. The Bridge of the Gods footrace is Sunday, and Stevenson has the Waterfront Music Fest all day Friday and Saturday.
