Monday. Record high temp possible in Hood River today. Now, that’s epic!

There wasn’t much wind on the water this morning at 6:30, but that wasn’t stopping the gradients from hiding amongst all those tiny wind ripples on the water. The 6am reading was .07 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc) and .32 (eph-pdt). Once gain we’ll be saved from the heat wave by the mighty Columbia Gorge winds! Continued…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Expect light wind this morning picking up to 10-13 by noon from Stevenson to Hood River. The wind will continue to increase this afternoon, picking up to 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles, likely dropping a bit near Hood River after 3pm. As usual, right?

Tomorrow starts off with westerlies at 5-10 and follows a similar pattern to today: Expect 12-15 by noon from Stevenson to Mosier, building to 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River. We may get lucky late in the day and see 23-26 from Swell to Doug’s, but I wouldn’t be on it. A more likely scenario is that the Rowena stretch of the river will also peak at 20-23.

See below for details.

Everything changes Tuesday night the door opens for the marine layer to return to Portland and beyond. Expect Dawn Patrol at 23-27 on Wednesday, probably at Swell, but maybe also at Mosier. The wind will rise to 28-32 Wednesday afternoon. Expect 26-30+ both Thursday and Friday.

Speaking of Thursday and Friday, Thursday through Sunday at Pistol River looks ridiculous, with north wind at 30-50. Long-range models are predicting a NW swell at 5-7′ too, so it looks nearly ideal for the Wave Bash.

For the next three days at the coast, expect the following (north/central/south): 20-25/25-30/25-30, W 3′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/25-30/30+, S 2 @ 16. Wednesday: 15-20/20-25/30-40, S 2 @ 15.

Random Morning Thoughts

(These thoughts are from the email list, but you get to read them too!)
That was not a very smooth move on my part yesterday sending every single person on my mailing list a renewal reminder. If you weren’t one of the nine people who was meant to get that, I apologize.

You see, this is a homegrown operation, and I do everything manually. I like that touch – it means I get to send every subscriber a thank you note, and it makes me more likely to remember the names of the people on my mailing list. To be quite honest, I never intended for there to be a mailing list; this forecast started as my friends Dave B. and Laura G. emailing back and forth talking about the day’s wind. We just wanted to find more-better wind, like you do.

Anyway, being human, I make an occasional error. In the past, I would have been mortified by my mistake yesterday. Now, I’m just glad Google let me send a correction email. That’s progress! I’d love it if I didn’t mess up with the forecast occasionally, but I mess it up at least once a week. Sometimes I forget to add people after they donate, sometimes they drop of the list for no apparent reason, sometimes I put them in the wrong month’s list, sometimes I forget to add a section, and sometimes I put an actually white WSV in the WSV section. Horrors.

It’s humbling. And that’s just the list. I f**k up the forecast plenty too!

So, I apologize for the unintended reminder email yesterday. And I apologize for all those days when I don’t nail the forecast – know that I feel bad when I don’t get it right. I don’t want to mess up your day by making forecasting errors. Now, on to a more positive note: if you like strong wind, go clear your schedule for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s still Aug-une out there, and not only is it Aug-une, it’s a touch on the muggy side, with the dewpoint sitting at 57 degrees this morning. Today’s record high temp is 93 degrees, and that is likely to fall. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the mid to upper 90’s this afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate wind late. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks a little cooler, but still sunny: temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, no rainbows.

The heat wave breaks on Wednesday (but it’ll still be sunny!) with temps dropping 10 degrees from Tuesday; expect mid 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you would like to ride bikes Bikram style, you can do so this afternoon as the temps climb into the mid 90’s again. That goes for both the road and the dirt. If you want to do a road ride during the rest of this week, tomorrow brings light wind in the morning. The rest of the week looks super windy, so you’ll need to plan rides in the upper valleys where the wind will be less strong. Unless you enjoy a 30mph headwind, in which case, be my guest and ride all week long.
