Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hello shredders! Today and tomorrow will be rainy up on the mountain, but there’s hope for snow on Friday. Wednesday and Thursday look sunny. You’ll have a chance to experience All the Weather on the slopes this week. Looking into the extended forecast, the weather turns cooler, on average, after the 23rd. What the ensembles don’t capture in this prediction is obvious in the deterministic GFS – we’re slated to have a series of systems impact the region. Some of those will be above freezing with rain, and some will be below freezing with snow. In other words, the details aren’t clear, but the forecast looks a bit more hopeful than it’s been. Still… the 50th percentile for snow between now and the end of the year is pretty dismal: 9-12”. 90th percentile: 17-22”.

Monday, however, is certain to be rainy. The snow level starts at 9500′, falls to 7500′ in the afternoon, and drops to 7000′ overnight. About 0.1-0.2” rain is forecast during the day. Overnight, about 0.4” rain falls on the slopes. Wind will be SW 5-15 during the day. It’ll rise to SSW 25-50 (depending on location) overnight. Interesting twist: there’s so much south in this system that there won’t be much orographic assistance; lowland rainfall and mountain rainfall shouldn’t be too far apart. Thankfully.

Drizzly weather continues on Tuesday. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. About 0.1” rain is forecast during the day. Just a trace is in the cards overnight. Wind: SSW 25-50 early, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight.

Extended: Wednesday and Thursday look sunny. Temps at 5000′ will be in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. Expect light wind both days. A moderately strong cold front plows into Mt. Hood on Friday. It may start with a brief shot of rain, but that quickly transitions to snow. Models call for somewhere between 0.25” and 1.0” water equivalent during the 24 hour period with the snow level dropping from 6500′ to 1000′. So, anywhere from 3-11” of new snow. Let’s vote for 11”, shall we? More precision is possible as we get closer to Friday. After that, models suggest generally colder weather, average for this time of year. It’s way too far out for precise forecasting, but it looks like we’ll see intermittent systems, some of which will be too warm, and some of which will be just right for snow. Please. Let it snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday was a pretty wild day on the river, and it was great to see all of you out there! Easterlies stick around for the next four days. Models are hinting at a chance for short-lived westerlies with the passage of a cold front on Friday. We’ll keep an eye on that. In the meantime…

Expect a rainy day today, pretty much all day. Easterlies start at 50mph at Iwash (Rooster) and fade to 40. Stevenson holds at 25-30 all day. Since the Viento sensor is broken, there won’t be any wind there – if there’s no sensor to record it, there’s no wind, right? River flow during the daylight hours yesterday was 109-132kcfs, river temp is 46.5F, and high temp forecast is 40F. Tuesday starts with 45 at Iwash and 30-35 at Stevenson with heavy rain. By midday, the wind drops to 20-25 at Stevenson and 25-30 at Iwash. Sunset wind will be 15-20 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Iwash. Wednesday looks like 20mph or so pretty much all day at both launches. Thursday: 25-30ish. Friday: E 20-25 in the morning with a shot at W 20-23 in the afternoon. Models are all over the place with the strength of any west wind, but we’ll watch it for sure for a change of pace! Stay warm out there. Have a great day!
