Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is tricky for the next several days as systems swing in from the SW. Tuesday looks like a wild day and night with extremely heavy precipitation and very strong wind. After that, the storm track takes a liking to Washington, sending most, but not all, of the precipitation that way.

For Monday, there will be orographic snow flurries early with mostly clear sky later. Clouds move back in overnight. Snow level 2000′ to 2500′ all day and night. Up to 1” of accumulation, but probably not even that much. Wind: W 20 early, WNW 15 afternoon, WSW25 overnight.

Tuesday, like I said, looks pretty wild, even though precip amounts are a bit less than they were yesterday. The day starts out cloudy, turns snowy, then rainy, then super windy, then snowy. Snow level 2000′ early, 6500′ midday, 5000′ around 7pm, and 1500′ by Wednesday morning. We’ll see 2-3” of snow early, 2” of rain, possibly alternating with wet snow through 7pm, then 1.0” water value (WV) that falls as snow overnight, for 7-10” of new. Let me modify that: extremely strong NW wind overnight could actually double that new snow accumulation, giving us maybe 12-19” if we’re really lucky. However, the wind will be strong enough to damage the snow quality; expect sastrugi and windpack on Wednesday morning. OK, so about that wind: WSW 40+ all day becoming WNW 60 (which would shut down ALL the lifts if the resorts were open at night) and fading to NW 45 after midnight.

Wednesday morning starts with orographic snowfall, turns partly cloudy midday, and clouds over again in the late afternoon. Snow level 1500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Snowfall: 0.2” WV in the morning for a couple inches of powder. Wind: NW 45 early fading to WSW 20 in the afternoon and becoming SW 25 overnight. Precip slides by to the north on Thursday with a free air freezing level on Mt. Hood of 5500′. Friday’s forecast currently holds the potential for 9-11” of powder.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Monday starts off with light easterlies at 10-15 or so near Rooster Rock. After 11am, the wind will turn around to light westerlies at 5-10 through the entire Gorge. Maybe 3-5 near Hood River. Tuesday starts out with E 10-15 near Stevenson and Rooster. Around 1pm, the wind turns strong westerly WEST of Cascade Locks and stays calm in the rest of the Gorge. Overnight, the wind will pick up to W 30-40. Wednesday morning starts out with W 12-15 from Stevenson to Viento, calm to light westerlies in the central Gorge, and 23-27 east of The Dalles. The wind will die off to calm by noon or so.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s just a sloppy mess on the trails this morning with snow over freeze-thaw conditions. Don’t do it, okay? Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. I hear the Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
