Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Well, we had an amazing month of powder skiing. Then we had an amazing week or so of spring skiing. Now we’re heading into a week of spring weather, potentially accompanied by at least a sideswipe by an atmospheric river next weekend. If you’re wondering what all that means, I can put it into one word for you: rain!

For Monday, the models have decided the predicted precipitation will mostly stay to the south of Mt. Hood. So, we’ll have a cloudy day with a trace of rain. The snow level will be 6000′ all day and 6500′ after midnight. Wind: SE 10 early, E 15 in the afternoon, and E 20 overnight.

Tuesday looks cloudy for sure and rainy for maybe; models disagree on how far north precipitation will travel. The snow level will be 6500′ all day and 6000′ after midnight. Drizzle is possible during the day. At least 0.1” of rain falls in the evening. Wind: E 20 early, NE 5 in the afternoon, and SW 15 after midnight.

Wednesday’s models disagree on the snow level and thus also on the precipitation type! The snow level will be somewhere between 5000′ and 6000′. My gut instinct is higher rather than lower. Let’s call it “mixed precip” for the 24 hour period. About 0.3” water value (WV) falls during the day, for up to an inch of wet snow. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind: SW 15 early, SW 20 mid-morning, WSW 30 in the afternoon and evening, and SW 15 after midnight.

Looks like we’ll see heavier mixed precip on Thursday and Friday morning. Models like the idea of a switch to snow on Friday. Models disagree on the rain/snow choice for Saturday. Models are liking the idea of significant precipitation between Thursday and Sunday with the possibility of an atmospheric river either bulls-eyeing us or grazing us.

Gorge Wind

Not much happening in the wind for the next few days as a series of low pressure systems cruise the West Coast. For Monday, we’ll have easterlies at 10-15 all day long. Tuesday starts with east 5mph and turns around to west 5mph after 5pm. In other words, “light and variable”. Wednesday starts with W 5-10 in the west and W 13-16 east of Mosier. In the afternoon, as a front swings through, the wind picks up to gusty 10-13 in the west and gusty 22-27 from The Dalles to Arlington.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Monday is starting out overcast. Models have decided the rain predicted in yesterday’s model runs will now stay south of us. Some drizzle is still possible, but not all day. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks cloudy. Models disagree on the drizzle/no drizzle question. We will see some drizzle in the evening. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks rain. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline and Columbia Hills remain your best Gorge options for mountain biking at this time. Sounds like some stuff is open on Hospital Hill. I have seen several Strava rides in the lower part of Post Canyon. Use caution, and do not ride if you encounter mud. In road biking news, State Road, Mosier to The Dalles, and Sevenmile have been swept of gravel. The parsley (pink), yellow bells (yellow, duh) and grass widows (purple) are blooming, but there’s no sign of Balsam Root yet.
