Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Monday, and temps have dropped back below freezing on the mountain. They’ll stay there until the pineapples arrive on Monday evening. Heavy rain continues through Tuesday afternoon, when temps will drop once again. The temp fluctuations continue this week. Next chance of significant snowfall is Thursday.

For Monday, expect a cloudy start to the day on the mountain. Heavy precip moves in around 7pm, starting as snow and switching to rain. Snow level 3000′-4000′ during the day and 8000′ overnight. Precip: 2.0” water value (WV) overnight, for perhaps 3-5” of snow followed by 1.5”+ rain. Wind will be SW 15-20 early, SW 25-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 50+ after midnight.

Ski resorts operators and users should expect quite a mess on Tuesday: significant icing may accumulate on lifts as temps drop during the day, and strong enough wind to shut lifts down. Snow level 8000′ early, 5000′ around 4pm, and 2000′ after midnight. Precip: 2.0” between 4am and 4pm, mostly as rain, but maybe with an inch or two of wet snow at the tail end of the system. An additional trace of snow falls overnight. Wind will be impressive: WSW 50+ in the morning W 50 in the afternoon (that has the potential to shut down all the lifts), and W 40 after midnight.

Deicing challenges will likely be widespread on Wednesday morning. Luckily, there’s not much precip coming in. The day starts out clear, sees a few flurries midday, and turns cloudy with scattered mist through the evening. Snow level 2000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. Precip: trace of snow during the day. Trace of rain overnight. Wind: W 40 early, W 30 in the afternoon, SW 15-20 in the evening, and SW 30-35 overnight.

Thursday’s our best bet for significant snowfall. The quantity depends on how quickly the snow level drops, but models agree on 0.5” to 1.0” WV. We should end up with 5-10” of snow out of this system. A more precise forecast will have to wait until we get closer.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday, and we’ll have light east wind all day. Not enough to do anything with. Just enough to be easterly. Tuesday starts with E 5-10 and switches midday to W 13-16 in the western Gorge and gusty 22-26 in the east. Wednesday starts with gusty 13-16 out of the west everywhere and turns around to E 20-25 late in the afternoon. If you’re out in the river from Tuesday on, be especially watchful for debris in the water, as heavy rain and snow melt Monday night and Tuesday will wash debris into the Columbia.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay out of Post – it’s too muddy and too freeze-thawy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
