Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and it’s raining on the hill. The warm air moved in later than expected last night, meaning the mountain picked up almost a foot of new, about 7” more than predicted. That’s great news for the snowpack, but won’t be good riding today due to all the rain on top of it. We’ll see a fluctuating snow level for the rest of this week. Models disagree on the details, especially the farther out we get, but the general picture is for an active and wet pattern.

For Tuesday, we’ll see heavy rain in the morning, mixed precip midday, and snow overnight. Figuring out the exact amounts of rain and snow is a bit of a guessing game. Snow level 6500′ early, slowly falling to 2500′ after midnight. For 5000′, let’s go with 1.7” of rain followed by 0.4” water value (WV) mixed precip and snow for 2-3” of accumulation. Another 0.1”-0.2” WV falls overnight, for 1-3” of more-better-drier snow. Wind will be SW 40 early, WSW 50+ mid-morning, W 45-50 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 overnight.

Wednesday looks partly cloudy all day, possibly becoming clear overnight. A trace of snow may fall during the day, and a trace of mixed precip may fall overnight. Snow level 2500′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ after midnight. Wind WSW 30 early, W 25 midday, and SW 20-30 overnight.

Thursday starts off with light rain and switches to snow. Snow level 6500′ early, 7500′ mid-morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 500′ overnight. Precip: 0.4” WV during the day, mostly as rain, maybe ending with up to 1” of snow. Another 0.3” WV is forecast overnight, for 3” of plain old snow. Wind will be SW 30-345 early, WSW 40-45 midday, SW 25 in the afternoon, and NW 20 overnight.

Friday looks dry. Model forecasts for the weekends are in disagreement, but do appear to contain precipitation of some sort.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Tuesday, the wind will start out a mix of E and W. By midday, we’ll have W 15-20 west of Stevenson, very gusty 5-20 in the central Gorge, and gusty 20-23 east of The Dalles. River flow is 96,600cfs and temp is 45 degrees. Wednesday starts with W 10-13 everywhere. The wind will turn around to E 30-35 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with E 25-30. As a strong front moves through, there will be a brief period of gusty W 30-35 through the entire Gorge. If you go for it, be prepared for lots of debris in the water due to the Monday-Tuesday atmospheric river.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay out of Post, off Whoopdee, and off Hospital Hill – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Try the face of Syncline for best results. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s Zen meditation at Trinity Body Arts at 6am, free yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage Monk(s) at 6:30pm at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.
