Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Snow continues in the forecast for Mt. Hood for basically all of this week; temps have been trending downward, and so has the possibility of a switch to rain. We’re not totally out of the danger zone, but it’s looking good; 850mb temps are forecast to hold below +1C through this week.
We’ll start off the day with hardpack and packed powder groom, and we’ll finish it with dense snow. The snow level will be 5000′ during the day and will fall to 2500′ overnight or perhaps lower in heavier showers. We are expecting 0.3” water equivalent (WE) during the day, for 2-3” dense snow. Another 0.3”+ falls tonight (hard to pinpoint the location of heaviest snowfall, and also, orographics will help), for 3-4” powder. Wind will be SSW 15-20 this morning, SSW 20-40 this afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and W 25 after midnight.
Tuesday stays snowy. The effective snow level for Mt. Hood will be about 2000′ in the morning and 3000-3500′ from mid-afternoon on. About 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 1-2” of new. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for 2” more. Scattered thunderheads are possible, and heavier showers could drop unexpected heavier snow. Wind: W 25 in the morning, variable to 10mph in the afternoon, and S/SW 10-15 overnight.
Wednesday also looks, you got it, snowy. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.3-0.4” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” new. Another 0.5” or so is forecast overnight, for 4-6” regular quality Mt. Hood base-building snow. In April. Wind: S 10-15 for much of the day building to SW 25-40 overnight. The snowy weather continues on Thursday and Friday, and the base keeps building. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
A series of weather systems are slated to impact the Gorge for the next week or so, and that will impact wind quality. Pretend it’s winter (because it may feel like it) and go skiing! Today starts with easterlies and quickly adds rain. Easterlies will be 15-25mph from Rooster to Viento by late morning. In the afternoon, after 2pm, a cold front blows through. This brings a brief period of gusty 20-30 first to the west, then to the central, then to the eastern Gorge. River flow is 150kcfs, river temp is not budging at 45F, and high temp forecast is 53F. Tuesday starts calm. The wind picks up to light westerlies at less than 10mph with showers and hail in the afternoon. High temp: 53F. Wednesday brings easterlies. They start at 10-15mph at Stevenson and 20-25 at Rooster. By late morning, the wind briefly jumps to 30-35mph at Stevenson and 25-30mph at Rooster as a low moves offshore. The wind then turns calm early afternoon and picks up to W 10-15 west of Bonneville Dam in the late afternoon. High temp: 55F.

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Cloudy sky early adds rain midday. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s later. Light wind the first half of the day turns to brief strong westerlies in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be rainy in the morning and afternoon with a brief break midday. Hail and/or thunder and strong showers are possible. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be rainy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light easterlies in the morning go calm in the afternoon. 11% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides start this weekend. Meet at the shop at 9am for a mixed surface ride. Then there will be bike racing on the big screen in the afternoon.
