Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Nice weather doesn’t mean wind this time of year, but it sure is nice out there! Our best chance for westerlies is Tuesday. The potential for strong-enough easterlies exists Thursday through Saturday. But generally speaking, you’ll want to find something fun and exercise other than wind sports for most of this week.

Not much at all happens on Monday. A few hours of east wind at 12-15mph is possible this morning from Iwash (Rooster) to Viento, but that’s probably not going to be enough to get you on the water. And it’ll die off fast. By this afternoon, we’re looking at calm wind. River flow over the last 24 hours was 63-81kcfs, river temp is 79F, and high temp forecast is 64.94F.

A weak weather system on Tuesday sets us up with cool air offshore and warm air in the desert. Unfortunately, that cool air offshore is associated with a weak low. Expect gusty conditions. The day starts with 16-19 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 east of Mosier and at Stevenson. A period of gusty 20-23 is possible late morning from Stevenson to Avery with 14-17 at Rufus. The wind then drops to 16-19 west of Lyle, rises to gusty 21-24 from Lyle to Avery, and holds at 14-17 near Rufus. East of there: not much at all. High temp: 74F under increasingly cloudy sky.

Wednesday brings a weak system through. This one actually drags in some rain west of The Dalles. That’ll force you to seek wind east of The Dalles. Expect 7-10mph all day west of The Dalles. We do sometimes see a bump to the upper teens or low 20s post-frontal. Don’t rule out a sneaker session at the Hatch late afternoon. You’re probably better off headed out east. Models call for 23-26 from Avery to Threemile by midday with Boardman joining in the afternoon. Remember that those numbers predict sensor readings, and the desert sensors read high compared to Swell. High temp: 67F and drizzly in Hood River. 70F and mostly sunny in Arlington.

Extended: models give us easterlies Thursday through Saturday. As of right now, I’m guessing 23-26 on Thursday, 28-32 Friday, and 24-27 on Saturday. As of right now, Sunday’s wind looks light and variable. That’s all for now. Enjoy this beautiful day!
