Monday: moist, windy, and great for gardening!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Rock Creek in Mosier is now closed to anyone who is not a resident of zip code 97040. This is due to visitors not practicing social distancing at the beach. All Oregon (Viento, Rowena) and Washington (Doug’s, Hatchery) State Parks are closed at this time. The Hood River Marina and Event Site are closed. The Army Corps has closed all parks (The Wall, Rufus, Roosevelt). Swell City is closed. Please do not come here to do wind sports. If you’re local and getting on the water somehow, follow Maui rules: rig quickly, get in the water, and leave as soon as you are done. No hanging out. Maintain at least six feet space on land and on the water. Do not place yourself directly upwind or downwind of anyone. Don’t go harder than 50%, and keep your focus at 100%. This is not the time to get injured.

Not much is happening on the river this Monday morning, but the wind will come back with a vengeance this afternoon. For the pre-noon hours, expect light and variable wind in the west with gusty 12-16 east of The Dalles. As this weather system moves through, the wind rises to gusty 13-16 in the west and gusty 25-29 from Rowena to Boardman, or perhaps Avery to Boardman.

Tuesday starts out calm, and doesn’t change much; very, very light westerlies at 3-5mph or so arrive in the evening. Wednesday starts with easterlies at 5-10 for Rooster to Viento with calm wind everywhere else. The wind picks up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River midday. Give it an hour or two more, and the west drops to 12-15 and the east, Avery to Threemile, picks up to gusty 27-31. Thursday currently looks to max out at 22-25 form Rowena to Rufus.

Jones, Sauvie’s, and Coast forecast are on break to discourage travel.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

It’s been raining up on the slopes all night – about 0.3” of rain fell Sunday night into Monday morning. Rain continues this morning before turning to showers this afternoon. The snow level will be 7500′ all day and will rise to 9500′ overnight. It appears models are overestimating the rain that will fall; the GFS says 0.7”. Let’s call it an additional 0.3” to 0.4” during the day followed by a trace overnight. Wind: WSW 30-40 in the morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 after midnight.

Tuesday looks clear in the morning with high clouds from midday on. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9500′ in the morning and 12,000′ in the afternoon and evening. No precip. Wind: WSW 10-15 during the day, SW 10-20 in the evening, and SSW 10-20 overnight. Wednesday starts partly cloudy, then turns rainy, and is followed by a few snowflakes. The snow level will be 12,000′ in the morning, 9000′ in the afternoon, 5000′ around midnight, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.05” rain falls in the afternoon followed by 0.6” rain and a trace of snow overnight. Wind: SSW 10-20 early, SW 20-35 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 overnight. Thursday and Friday looks clear, and the GFS is forecasting snow for next weekend.
