Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning snow folks. Models don’t hold much for snow through the end of the year, but they’re starting to perk up for the first week or ten days of January. The ECMWF sets us on a colder path to start next year. The GFS lags behind a bit, but appears to like the idea too. Percentiles for snow through January 9th are… 50th: 18” total. 90Th: 28” total. That’s not epic, by any means, but it would be enough to keep the slopes open and perhaps get some more (and some Nordic skiing, please – if you want that right now, you’re headed to Bachelor or to Mazama).

First thing to note on today’s forecast is the road conditions above Hood River on Highway 35. An ice storm is in progress. If you don’t have to, don’t. Up on the mountain, snow early quickly transitions to rain. Overnight, it switches back to mixed precip and then a little snow. The snow level will be 6500′ by sunrise, 7000′ in the afternoon, 5500′ around midnight, and 4000′ after midnight. About 0.5” rain is forecast today followed by 0.4” mixed precip (we could get an inch or two of snow if we’re lucky). Wind: SSW 10-20 early rising to SW 15-30 by sunrise, SW 30-50 in the evening, and WSW 30-40 after midnight.

Tuesday starts off with a few flurries and quickly turns clear and sunny. High clouds arrive in the afternoon and perhaps drag in a trace of rain overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 9500′ after midnight. Wind: WSW 30-40 early fades to S 5-15 int eh afternoon and rises to S 15-35 overnight.

Rain is forecast on Wednesday. The snow level will be 9500′ in the morning. It falls to 5500′ in the afternoon and 5000′ overnight. Unfortunately, the precip will pretty much be done by the time the snow level falls. As of this morning, we’re looking at 0.4” rain during the day followed by a trace of snow, just flurries, in the evening. Wind: S 15-35 in the morning, SW 25-40 in the afternoon and overnight. A trace of mixed precip is forecast on Thursday. Models hint at a more organized system late next week, but the details are far from clear. No consensus on that one yet. Looking out deeper into the future, the Euro drags temps downwards to start next year. Vote for that. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
