Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
There’s almost no chance for snow in the forecast this week, which means there’s going to be some epic spring skiing and hiking for turns in the backcountry. Despite a forecast of some snowfall this morning, clouds are below the level of the resorts, keeping them in sunshine. Timberline, by the way, is the only one open Monday through Thursday this week.
For Monday, expect sunshine this morning and partly cloudy sky this afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind will be W 20 in the morning, NW 10 in the afternoon, and N 10-15 overnight.
Tuesday looks clear. The FAF will be 6000-7000′ all day. Wind will be N or NE 10-15 all day. Wednesday looks clear. The FAF will rise from 7000′ in the morning to 10,000′ in the afternoon. NE wind at 10 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. Thursday and Friday looks a lot like Wednesday: warm temps, no new snow, and light wind.
Random Morning Thoughts
The things going on inside our heads can be captivating. Even if they feel terrible, they can command our entire attention. Heck, our thoughts probably succeed at dominating our attention when they feel terrible. How often have you spent a day unintentionally reflecting on gratitude, feelings of awe, or the natural beauty around you. Pretty rare to have that happen without intent, eh? Much more common to be sucked in by painful thoughts floating around inside of you.
Sometimes that internal experience can feel like the entire universe. Well gosh golly, when did you become some important?!?! Joking aside, when we feel completely alone and miserable, it’s important to reconnect with the fact that we are part of a larger world, a larger community.
A simple way to do this is to look up. For example, have you ever spent an entire bike ride or wind sport session focused on what’s in your head. STOP IT! No, seriously. Intentionally drag your focus away from yourself and look at the flowers. Look at the unicorns and rainbows on the river. Look at the view of the Gorge. Notice the other people around you having fun. For goodness sakes, look at the ticks if that will distract you from you. There’s a whole big world out there, and engaging with it in any way, even visually, will make you feel better. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Monday, and we’re headed into a couple days of west wind. For Monday, low pressure sits over the Pacific Northwest, destabilizing the atmosphere some (but not a lot) and keeping west flow mostly below the Cascade Crest. We’ll have 14-19 from Stevenson to Rowena this morning with 18-22 farther east. As the atmopshere stabilizes more this afternoon, the wind will pick up to 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington with 14-19 west of there.
Conditions settle down even more on Tuesday as offshore high pressure combines with inland low pressure for a Corridor sort of westerly day. We’ll start with 15-18 from Viento to Mosier. In the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 25-29 from Viento to Rufus, maybe including Stevenson as well. Maybe not. Locations east of Rufus will probably max out at 10-13. Wednesday basically looks calm. Thursday morning looks calm, and Thursday afternoon looks like 18-23.

Road and Mountain Biking
According to Dirty Fingers (who reported something from the Ranger), Knebal and Eightmile and Surveyor’s are open. Given a photo I received yesterday, that information is not true. Knebal and Eightmile are not open, which makes a lot more sense than them being open this time of year. Dog River, however, is hosting the Super D this weekend, so it being open makes sense. Other than that, you will find ridiculous amounts of wildflowers on any trail east of Post Canyon right now.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events start at noon with community meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine. There’s $5 Tai Chi at 2:30 at the Hood River Adult Center, a stress reduction class at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30, community yoga at 6 at Samadhi in White Salmon, and free Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-Valley Elementary in Odell.
If you’re already thinking about next weekend, you’ll want to get some extra sleep between now and then because the Eta Aquarids meteor shower is happening. The Dog River Super D downhill mountain bike race is on Sunday, which means you’ll want to stay away from that trail all weekend. Next Sunday is the Seis de Mayo free organized bike ride supporting the National Psoriasis Foundation – that leaves Kickstand Coffee in Hood River at 10am and goes to Rowena Crest, where there will be free donuts.

Have an awesome day today!
