Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Monday starts out mostly cloudy with light snowfall. Sunshine breaks through late morning to early afternoon, and snow returns in the evening. Clear sky returns after midnight. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and the free air freezing level will fall to 1000′-1500′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is expected this morning, for an inch of new. Ditto this afternoon. Ditto tonight. That’s about 3” medium density new snow for the 24 hour period. Wind: WSW 20-30 this morning, W 25 this afternoon, and S 5-10 overnight.

Tuesday will be sunny to start with packed powder on the ground. Get it quickly before it warms. High clouds arrive in the afternoon and add a filter to the sun. That should help keep the snow from warming too much. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: S 10 in the morning, E 15 in the afternoon, and E 10-15 overnight.

Wednesday will be high overcast, then sunny, the high overcast again in the afternoon. Snow arrives in the evening as do much cooler temps. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning and 4500′ in the afternoon. When the snow arrives, the snow level will be around 3500′, and it will fall to 1000-1500′ after midnight. As of this morning, models suggest 0.3” WE overnight for 3-4” increasingly dry snow. Wind: E 10-15 early turns to W 15 in the afternoon and builds to W 30 overnight.

Significant snowfall is forecast Thursday into Friday, and snow continues into Saturday. 850mb temps (5000′ or so) will be -5C or less. That’s indicative of light, fluffy, powdery goodness in your future. Those temps fall as low as -7C or -8C Thursday night into Friday – lowland snow isn’t out of the question! It’s going to be a great end to the week on the slopes. Make plans now!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies kick off the work week. We’ll have a day of easterlies on Tuesday followed by three days of westerlies. Monday starts with pressures of 29.66/29.64/29.62, just enough for westerlies at 5-10mph all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday wind rises to 10-13 west of The Dalles and 16-19 east of The Dalles. In the afternoon, we should see Rufus to Arlington climb to gusty 22-25 with 10-13 to the west. River flow readings are 80-86kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast is 51F.

Tuesday starts light and variable and sunny. Easterlies rise to 20-25 form Rooster to Viento mid-morning before dropping to 15 from Rooster to Viento in the afternoon. Areas east of Hood River see the easterlies rise to 10mph in the afternoon. High temp: 57F and sunny. Wednesday starts with E 10-15 in the usual spots. The wind turns calm mid-morning and picks up to W 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 59F. Thursday and Friday look showery in the western Gorge with gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Many of the trails will be muddy with the exception of Syncline. Please avoid the muddy trails (Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Post) – if you ride them, you’ll do major damage and ruin the next person’s ride.. You might be able to ride the Deschutes or Klickitat trails or Syncline, but you’ll be most successful on gravel. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
