Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There are so many times when the forecast goes from snow to rain, but the opposite is happening for this week. Every time I look at the models, they’ve shifted more towards snow. For today, Monday, you can expect light snowfall during the day followed by clear sky tonight. The snow level will be 4000′ all day. We’re not going to see much precip – just .1” water value (WV) – for another inch or so of snow. Wind today will be WSW 15 or so all day long. Continued after the chart…

The snow level will be 3500′ early, 5500′ for a brief period in the afternoon, and then will drop to 2500′ by Wednesday morning. Between 4pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday, we’ll see around .8” WV, for 7-9” of new snow. Wind on Tuesday will be light SW early and SSW 20 in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday brings another round of light snowfall. The snow level will be 2500′ for most of the day, 2000′ in the evening, and 3500′ after midnight. We’ll see .2” WV between 4am and 4pm for 2-3” of new snow. That’ll be followed by flurries overnight. Wind on Wednesday will be WSW 20-25 all day.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday looks interesting, and not just because it involves things like Turducken, Tofurkey, and yams topped with homemade marshmallows. Thursday brings two weather systems. The first, during the day, will bring quite a bit of snow. The second, arriving in the evening, looks warmer, perhaps warm enough to fall as rain.

The snow level Thursday will be 3500′ early, rising briefly to 5000′ mid-morning before falling back to 3000′ in the afternoon. The snow level will rise to 6000′ with the arrival of the second system. We’ll see .9” WV between 4am and 4pm (that’s the first weather system), giving us 7-9” of new snow. We’ll see 1” WV in that warmer evening system. As of right now, that looks to start as snow and switch to rain at ski area base elevations.

In the long range and totally unreliable forecast, you can contemplate flurries on Saturday followed by 2-3” of rain on Sunday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much to talk about in the wind forecast: expect light and variable wind this morning with westerlies at 5-8 this afternoon. Tuesday looks like E 25-30 at Rooster for much of the day with W 13-16 after 5pm. Wednesday looks like W 5-8 to start with W 13-16 from Stevens’ Locks to Arlington from 10 to 2pm. The wind will fade back to W 5-8 after 2pm.

Random Morning Thoughts

Stereotypes can be positive or negative, and we forget that positive stereotypes also constrain our thinking and lead to bias. Last night I read a horrifying article on a major news outlet suggesting that Donald Trump is our first Jewish president.

The article made use of many “positive” Jewish stereotypes: Jews work hard. Jews are entrepreneurial. Jews want to pass their businesses to children. Jews are rich. Jews are highly educated at Ivy League institutions. Jews are, according to this article, “charismatic, opinionated, ambitious, aggressive, combative, committed and passionate about his ideas and beliefs. [Jews say] whatever is on [their] mind, even if it offends …”

Use of a “positive” stereotype can be a strategy to draw out anger and hatred from people who have an intrinsic dislike of people who hold those qualities. Just want to point that out before I move on…

When we hold a positive stereotype about someone (let alone a dozen stereotypes), our biases kick in. If we assume each member of a group holds the values and qualities of those stereotypes, we won’t relate to the person as a unique human being. Instead, we’ll relate out of our past experiences with people who have those qualities. This, unfortunately, keeps us from connecting on a deep level.

See if you can notice when this is happening. Seeing is the first step to freedom. Know yourself, and you’ll know others better. We’re all awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s a very strong Nothing this morning topped by dense clouds. We may see it break up a bit this afternoon as a weather system leaves east. If we’re lucky, and I’m feeling lucky today, we’ll see sunbreaks later on. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 50’s this afternoon. Light wind. 39% chance of rainbows. Tuesday brings Nothing to start and rain after 3pm or so. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. East wind all day, west wind after sunset. 1% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy and sprinkly. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. That’s followed by Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Thursday is the annual Turkey Trot, benefiting the Mosier Community School. The run takes place Thursday morning on the Twin Tunnels Trail, Hood River side. More information is available here, including the fact that you get $5 off registration if you ride your bike or run to the event.

Have an awesome day today!
