Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! The windy streak continues… Strongest wind shifts to the eastern Gorge on Tuesday as rain moves into the region. We’ll continue with “enough” wind through at least Wednesday. Beyond Friday, there’s too much variation in the ensembles to make a call. On top of that, I’ll be leaving for retreat for five days Friday morning, and the housesitter is unable to provide you a forecast. So, let’s dive in! Wait, not yet. Today is the Gorge Wind Social at Ferment starting at 5:30pm. Wear industry gear for a free pint of beer or free kombucha. Raffle at 6:30pm.
Monday starts with pressures of 30.29/30.20/30.16 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.04. The metro area was socked in with marine clouds, and the desert and Hood River were sunny. With NW flow in place, the marine clouds will hold out for a while and allow the desert to get a jump on heating. Expect 13-16ish from Swell to Rufus early with 7-10 at cloudy Stevenson and 15-20 at always-windy Viento. By mid to late morning, the wind rises to 21-24 from Swell to Mosier with Stevenson not far behind. Areas to the east wait until the afternoon to build. When they do, we’ll have 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus mid-afternoon. Arlington and Threemile should join for the executive session. This leaves us with the Corridor to parse out for the afternoon. This really depends on what happens with the marine clouds. If they stick around in the metro area, the Stevenson-to-Hood River stretch will hold at 21-24 or a touch more. If those clouds burn off, you’ll see the wind drop to gusty 17-20. River flow over the last 24 hours was 188-286kcfs, river temp is 58.28F, and high temp forecast is 67F for Hood River.
A cold front on Tuesday brings rain to the Gorge, but this doesn’t stop the wind. You might catch a quick Viento-Hood River dawn patrol at 20-23 before the wind drops to 11-14. As the front approaches late morning, Swell-Doug’s rises to 20-23, and Avery-Threemile rises to gusty 25-28. While the wind will continue, models have rain falling everywhere except The Dalles (yes, east of The Dalles all the way to the Tri-Cities too!). It doesn’t look like an awesome setup. That said, the wind will pick up to gusty 25-30 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: just 59F.
You’ll be better served on Wednesday. Rain stays west of Hood River. An upper level and surface low move into the Columbia Basin or thereabouts. Could be central Oregon, which would still give us wind. We’ll have 28-32+ pretty much all day from Lyle all the way to Arlington. Ensembles are VERY optimistic about the eastern Gorge for Wednesday. Do keep an eye on the current for the Rufus stretch. Threemile and Boardman join in late. For those of you wanting to skip the drive: late morning or early afternoon may give us gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River. Models drop the wind to the mid teens after 2pm or so west of Lyle.
Extended: lesser westerlies (mid teens) are forecast for Thursday. Not much is forecast for Friday. Beyond that, ensemble spread really increases. Many members call for a strong west wind day on Saturday, but it’s far from unanimous. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a fabulous day on the river!

Cycling
Cascadia Dirt Cup is May 18/19 in Post. Avoid. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out.
